F***ing tickly cough! Just want to sleep!

Have had an annoying tickly cough that starts as soon as I lie down for about a week and haven't slept properly in four days.

Am dreading attempting to go to sleep tonight.

I've tried hot honey and lemon. Any other remedies that work?

Codeine Linctus is safe to use during pregnancy. Worked a bit for me - enough to get some sleep. Good luck

I was like this a few weeks ago so I feel your pain. I ended up propping myself up on 5 pillows so I virtually slept sitting up. Also don't let yourself get dehydrated - drink warm drinks, but not tea/coffee, try warm Ribena or something instead. I really hope you sleep tonight. I was the same about dreading going to bed Sad.

Thanks ladies, was better last night, I probably got about five hours' sleep. Bliss!

I've got it too, it's horrible! There's another thread on this here

Pholcodine linctus works a treat but I doubt you can take it in pregnancy.

Last night I had 3 Jakemans honey, lemon and menthol cough sweets and they worked for a bit. If menthol's OK I suggest ypou get some of those - they're in a yellow packet, and look very traditional. You can get them in most chemists and supermarkets I think.

Another thing that can help is inhaling steam - so hang out in the bathroom, or actually inhale steam from a bowl, with a towel over your head, old-school style, with eucalyptus or the like (again only if it's allowed in pregnancy - I'm not sure of it is or not.)

Warm ribena works for me too, but I thought it was psychosomatic as it reminds me of my mum giving it to me when I was ill when I was little Smile

The lemon and honey linctus from chemists is fine.

Try steaming with menthol (olbas oil) too before bed - the steam softens the throat so you go to sleep without coughing and not so irritated.

And propping myself up on lots of pillows has helped too.

Have you tried one of the local anaesthetic sprays for sore throats? I get a horrible tickly cough at the end of almost every cold, so bad I'm almost sick with it, and I use the anaesthetic spray because it numbs away a tickle just as well as it numbs away soreness.

Are anaesthetic ones allowed when you're pg? Pharmacist didn't know.
