WWYD - Chicken pox in nursery?

I am currently 32+5weeks pregnant with my 3rd child. I have definately had chicken pox as a child. Neither of my boys have had chicken pox or the varicella vaccine. I have been informed today there is a case of chicken pox in my 2yr olds preschool class. There are also other cases in other classes. He attends 2 mornings a week. Would it be advisable to keep him home from preschool for the last 3 days of term to prevent risk to the baby?

I would still send him as the risk is practically non existent. But that would be me. This is you.

If you are feeling doubtful then I would keep him off. It's your life and your worry!

Just bear in mind that if one's got it now then it could be weeks before its been through the lot of them...

Not worth the worry imho, keep him home and enjoy Christmas without stressing. I know I would have it at the back of my mind and anyway, who wants chickenpox over Christmas??

It may well not work, as the afflicted children would have been infectious when pre-symptomatic. But there may be other pre-symptomaticc infectious children there now, and if you would feel better for keeping them off then do so. The incubation period is quite long - 14 - 21 days, so the risk could last a while.

The important question is: have you had it?

StealthPolarBear · 12/12/2010 21:41

there shouldn't be any risk to the baby should there? Since you have had it?

eviscerateyourmemory · 12/12/2010 21:44

Im not sure how keeping him off nursery now would reduce any risk to the baby?
If you know that you are immune, then if your DS caught CP soon they should be over it by the time the baby is born.

ohh i see

erm I think it's too late, sorry, your DS will already have been exposed. But I'm sure it will have been fine, all being well they should be over it in the next 6 weeks or so. Hope they get it very soon so you know one way or the other well before the baby's born :)

I've had it and so as dh but neither of my sons has.
It was a case of if he hasn't already been infected then he could become in the next few days as the nursery is rife with CP.

As I have 2 children I thought if one got it now, may not show for 21 days, then if the other got it and didn't show forn another 21 days then could still be infecious when baby comes. Rather unlikely I know but would be horrendous if happened.

Hadn't considered it may still be going round after Xmas hols.

I wouldn't worry about it as they could be exposed anywhere at any time really. Chicken pox was going round DD1's nursery when I was pregnant when I was pregnanct with DS1. She didn't end up getting it that time, and didn't actually get it until a couple of yrs later - you just can't be sure keeping them at home will prevent it. My friend's daughter had chicken pox when he baby was new born - the baby was protected from her breast milk so wasn't affected at all.

eviscerateyourmemory · 13/12/2010 20:12

If you have had chicken pox them the baby will have some protection from you.
Breastfeeding doesnt make any difference to the risk of getting chicken pox, due to the type of antibody transmitted during breastfeeding not being the type that would protect from chicken pox.
