I am 20 weeks pregnant and have a really bad sore throat, which is preventing me from getting to sleep at night. Bought some Covonia antibacterial throat spray from Boots, then read the instuctions and it says that you should consult your doc before taking when pregnant???!! My surgery doesn't operate on a Saturday, so to be on the safe side called NHS Direct for advice. No one called me back with advice! Does anyone know if it's ok to take a throat spray when preggers? Ta!

Call your local Pharmacist - they will be able to look it up for you and tell you. In the meantime, use Honey, lemon and Hot water - worked for me! :o)

Hi Leilababy, my husband and I have also been sick (with sore throat/congestion) for the past 2 weeks, and I don't know about throat sprays, but I did get some simple homeopathic remedies from Boots, which the pharmacist approved: glycerine syrup and berry pastils (these are really yummy -- I guess many candies could substitute).

On top of that, I also drank the honey/lemon/hot water, and now my hubbie and I drink loads of hot water.

Finally, when it was at its worst, I gargled warm salt water in the mornings and at night as the salt is supposed to combat any infections.

Hope you feel better soon! :)

ice cream? Grin

hot water, honey & lemon always does the trick for me - even nicer if you add a few slices of fresh ginger!

Thank-you all so much...will give these remedies a go!!!

Probablt too late but I had a killer sore throat last week - so bad I couldn't talk or swallow as it hurt so much :( I tried paracetamol but it did bog all for me. I too did the honey and lemon thing and made sure I kept drinking - when my throat was more moist the pain was a little better. I also did alot of steam inhalations with a tiny bit of olbad oil throughout (from the start of sore throat to end of congestion). It really helped. The steam made my throat more moist helping the throat and the olbas helped the general sinuses. I usually get colds really badly when not pg and I'm convinced that the regular inhalations (4 a day every day for 10 - 15 mins) helped stop my sinuses getting blocked and recovered quickly. Still got the cough though....

Oh - another quick thought. Don't let you house get too cold as I find then it hurts to breathe at night the cold air. Assuming you have heating on, put a bowl of water near the radiator to help stop the room getting too dry.

I wouldn't bother with those throat sprays to be honest, they either do nothing at all or they're too harsh and damage the lining of your throat so it actually takes longer for it to heal. I'd recommend the remedies everyone else suggested here - honey, lemon etc as they not only soothe your throat but they also have natural antibacterials that'll help you to get over the infection. Lemon is high in vitamin C too which will help even further.

I'm exactly the same, although probably more chesty that throaty. Hurts like hell when I cough!

My friend bought me some Rochester Ginger drink from a health food store. It's just a firey hot Ginger drink which I sometimes sip instead of alcoholic drinks. Mainly because it feels like you're drinking something potent!

Anyway, I just tried it in hot water with lemon and honey and it's amazing! You could obviously achieve the same thing with some fresh ginger root but I recommend this too, it's got Elderflower and other natural bits in it, so it's just a bit different!

Apart from that I'm drinking lots of water, eating lots of Vitamin C packed fruit and taking my usual Pregnancy multi vitamin. I usually manage to fight off colds before they kick in by doing this, so hopefully it will work whilst I'm pregnant!

It's better not to use it. Try Olbas Pastilles from Holland & Barrett - they are made of natural oils. Really helped me.
