Recommended to take asprin...

I've got type one diabetes and it's been recommended for me to take a low dose of asprin for the rest of my pregnancy to help safeguard against pre-eclampsia, which I'm at a higher risk of developing. I've been putting it off as I hate blindly taking things while pregnant and I'm worried that the potential risks could outweight the potential benefits (everything has gone well up until now - thank God - and I don't want to interfere). Does anyone have any experience of this?

I took low dose aspirin (75mg) due to a blood clotting condition I have and it was fine, I had to have fragmin injections for 6 weeks after birth too but they hurt too much so I ended up having warfirin for the last 5 weeks! Blush

I had pre-eclampsia in my last pregnancy and wouldn't wish it on anyone. This time round I have been taking 75mg aspirin every day as prescribed by the consultant. Have had no adverse effects, and it is such a tiny dose. Have had well behaved blood pressure throughout (am now 38+5) HTH

if a medic has recommended it then they'll have done the risk/benefit analysis for you and with lot more education and experience to back it up (sorry if that sounds harsh). However, if you want further reassurance get thee to a pharmacist, they study at uni for 5 years and know all about the drugs being prescribed so will be able to give you a good idea of what it can do for you and to you.

BTW, pre-eclampsia is not to be underestimated. One of my school friend's and her baby died. If it was me I'd take an aspirin if it lowered the risk of that.

I have to take the same daily, as I have combined high bmi and bp. A small price to pay for safety as blood does get thicker through pregnancy without added complications x

Thanks for the advice guys. I have always had really good blood pressure despite the diabetes (in fact during pregnancy it's been on the low side). Do you think that matters? Could the asprin take it too low or am I over-thinking things?

bluebump same as me ! Is it Factor V ? Those Fragmin injections wreck don't they, I used to get tearful sometimes when I had to do it, like bee stings.

I took aspirin 75mgs throughout all 3 of my pregnancies and we are all fine, I continue to take it because I think it it healthy for the heart.

My son was severely growth restricted and delivered early because of that. My BP never went that high but I was advised I probably would have had PE if I remained pregnant. I have been advised to take aspirin in any future pregnancy.

Your position is different but I would be grabbing the aspirin, I would do anything for my next child not to go what my son went through. I have been advised just to take it before medical advice if I get pregnant so I reckon it must be safe.

I have been on prescribed Asprin since TTC due to a blood condition and clexane (form of LMW Heparin) since my BFP.

It's very safe, there are no known risks to taking it and it is frequently prescribed to women who have recurrent miscarriages.

I wasn't aware Asprin reduced the risk of Pre-eclampsia, but that is good to know, since my blood condition means I am at higher than average risk of it.

Take it. Don't understand why you wouldn't. Google what pre-eclampsia does, stats etc. I think that'll convince you.

Right, thank you. Reaching for the asprin right now!
