early pregnancy bleeding

Hi, I'm here on behalf of my wife. We learned a few weeks ago that my wife was pregnant through doing a home test (the 'blue' one that is always advertised on TV). It stated we were 2-3 weeks pregnant. We were overjoyed and are still unable to believe it fully yet!
However, last weekend, my wife started bleeding (very lightly) a bright red colour which was only noticable through her wiping when going for a pee. This happened 2 times during the night then the following afternoon with a slight clotting. We were devastated and feared the worst so my wife contacted the out of hours doctor who asked that we get in to see him that afternoon (the Sunday). On seeing him and discussing everything he mentioned it may be a 'threatened miscarriage' which wasnt all doom and gloom. It just meant keeping an eye on everything. he suggested we get in to see the gyno and ultrasound scan people the following day.
On going to see them (we were really expecting bad news) we were told that the scan (although not showing anything to read too deeply into at the mo, due to the earliness of it all) that my wife has a luteal cyst which is a really good sign as it helps provide nutrition for the baby (?). The ultrasound scan nurses said things looked hopeful and that they had their fingers crossed for us. They have re-booked us in on the 20th Dec as it will be 7-8 weeks and things can be seen along with a heartbeat monitored at that point.
The next day my wife started the bright red bleeding again (only light again and through wiping as on the Sunday, with no clotting). The bleeding was noticable on several occasions (again always light) then stopped. For the past 48 hours there has been no bleeding. There were never cramps or any signs of pain throughout the bleeding. Throughout my wife has had tender breasts which have grown slightly, she also has been feeling nauseous and has started fancying a Macdonalds (for the first time ever!!!!).
The bleeding was our main concern but the scan nurses suggested it may be implantation bleeding (?)

I would love to hear from any mums who have experienced similar signs and have gone on to have healthy babies. We have the midwife coming for the first 'booking appointment' on the Monday 20th Dec too. We also have the 12 week scan on the 12th/13th Jan (not usre which off hand)

Thanks
John D

in april 2008 found out i was expecting on a friday and then 4 days after that i started to bleed it was bright red but only a little bit went straight to hospital, they said everything looked ok, so maybe it was implantation bleeding they told me. after that it happend a few more times but eventually just stopped. and now i have a 2yr old perfectly healthy little boy.
hope everything goes ok for you and your wife

Yes, it's quite common to have an implantation bleed. Mine lasted for 5 days and fooled me in to thinking I'd had a period so I didn't find out until I was nearly 7 weeks!

At this stage all you and wife can do is make sure she gets lots of rest and eats well. I'm sad to say that miscarriages do happen (I had one at 7 weeks first time around). They aren't anyone's fault and there really isn't anything you can do to prevent it. Usually you'll get pregnant again fairly quickly and have no further problems. I'm now 23 weeks and I got pg on the 2nd month of trying.

Having said that a bit of bleeding isn't the same as miscarriage and your baby may well be fine. The sickness, sore boobs etc are all good signs because it means her body is producing plenty of the right hormones. All you can do at the moment is sit tight I'm afraid. The time will drag until your 12 scan so make sure you stay positive and enjoy Christmas (it may be the last one you get a lie-in for)!

Wishing you all the best

I had a luteal cyst that was diagnosed at 5 weeks pregnant. I didn't have the bleeding that can accompany it but I had terrible pains. I was advised that there was the possibility that I'd bleed but it never happened. They did an internal scan at the five week point then another at seven weeks where there was a strong heart beat and the little bean did a few wee jumps. I had my 12 week scan on Nov 29th and the cyst is resolving itself. I hope all goes well for you both.

Some people just bleed a lot in early pregnancy - I am one of them. If I hadn't known I was pregnant I would have sworn it was my period sometimes. I have also had luteal cysts, although as far as I know they've not affected anything.

It sounds like things were just too early with that first scan! Hopefully time will pass quickly for you both for the next one, and you'll see everything you should then.

Fingers crossed for you all!

I bled with my first and was sent for an early scan. There I was told that they saw a fetal pole but no heartbeat (about 6 wks) and that it was a threatened miscarriage. The next day I bled quite profuse bright red blood. Basically I was told that the internal probe can make the cervix bleed (this was ages afterwards - I wish I'd known at the time!). I was convinced then that I was losing him.

My son is now 4 1/2 and lovely. Good luck.

Phew! Thankyou so much. obviously we are sitting tight and cant predict a positive outcome but it's great to hear these positives and similar situations. Trouble is, I suppose, once you start, you can read too much into things and fear the worst. Thankyou all again. I will keep all informed as to what happens on the 20th x

I had bleeding on an off through the first 8 weeks of one of my pregnancies - it was for this reason I didn't know I was pregnant! Miscarriages do happen but implantation bleeding is common, as is a little bleeding from the cervix if it gets bumped, for example during sex, in the first trimester. Bleeding is especially common around the time you would have expected your period to arrive.

I'm 37 weeks pregnant now and had an early scan which showed a yolk and gestational sac but no foetus. I knew I was pregnant though and I was! It was just too early to see the baby because my cycle is so long they had my dates wrong.

Time to rest and take it easy. Wait for that scan that's coming up and try not to worry too much, especially as there were no cramps or pain with the bleeding. best of luck, I hope everything goes well, let us all know!
