If you've previously miscarried, do they scan you earlier than 12 weeks?

I have two Ds's and had htem wioth no problems. Back in the summer I conceived Dc3 but miscarried at 7 weeks.

I'm now pg again Grin but haven't got round to going to the doctor yet. I'm 5+1 and I'll try and go next week but can I expect any different treatment this time round, in light of my mc?

I think it varies from one area to another - certainly where I am they routinely offer you an early scan after a miscarriage (they discussed when I wanted mine, but could have been any time from 7 weeks onwards). I had two early MCs and for this pg was given 2 early scans at 8 and 10 weeks (the 8 week one was my "routine" early scan, the 10 week one because I told the EPU midwife that I was still nervous after the 8 week one, and they were very lovely about it).

You should certainly be asking for an early scan if you want one.

congratulations by the way! Grin

Not in my area.

So I marched off to the private clinic with my credit card and had an 8 week scan. Approx £120 for a scan IIRC. Seemed like a stupid thing to do at the time but DD was fine and it did put my mind at rest.

SandStorm · 09/12/2010 20:46

I remember being scanned repeatedly but I can't remember whether it was because I'd had a MC or because DD1 was premature with problems. Either way it felt like I was there every week.

MissBeehivingUnderTheMistletoe · 09/12/2010 20:50

I had two early m/c's and in the third pregnancy I was scanned twice before 12 weeks and then again at 15. I was a frantic knicker checker though. I would ask for them and see what they say. I had some funny pains at 15 weeks so went to A & E and they scanned me. I feel Blush about it now but it set my mind at rest.

Tangchi · 09/12/2010 20:51

They offered, I declined. An early scan which demonstrated a heart beat did nothing to predict my miscarriage on my first pregnancy.

PressureDrop · 09/12/2010 20:52

In my area, they don't offer additional scans unless you've a) miscarried after 12 weeks or b) miscarries more than three times before 12 weeks.

I'm not too bothered about having one to be honest, it's not like having a scan could stop me miscarrying this one, if that's the way it wants to go (hopefully not)

I just wondered if it was standard practice or not, that's all.

I guess I'll find out sooner or later - unless any of you happen to be in Warwickshire!

I'm in Warwickshire. And...I don't know. I thought they don't offer unless have had two mc's but could be wrong. I miscarried in Summer but as don't even have booking in appt until 8.5 weeks, no one to ask! So being an impatient type I've booked a private viability scan for 8 weeks. Luckily a place near us here do it for £60 which is very competitive. Still got another week and a half to wait though...

Jojay · 09/12/2010 23:03

I've heard of that place - a friend used it nad said it was excellent. Best of luck!

I think it all depends on the area/hospital.

After having 4 live birth children & a stillborn i suddently started having miscarriages. After the first two the consultant i was seeing gave me his email address to email him when i got a + test so i could arrange a scan with him.

Two more miscarriages + an ectopic later i finally got a sticky pregnancy. During that pregnancy (baby is 2wks old) i was scanned by him/his team at the epu once & sometimes twice a week from just before i was 4wks until i was 12 weeks.

I think you could ask for a referral to the epu for a scan, it can't hurt.

happycamel · 10/12/2010 08:52

I m/c at 7 weeks with my first and haven't had anything additional this time. As you said, it's not going to change anything and baby isn't viable until 24 weeks so even if they can see something going wrong it's not like they can do anything about it.

I'd just keep a positive frame of mind and work on the "if you don't know otherwise it will be fine" approach. Also, whilst there's no evidence scans are harmful you are exposing a very tiny baby to a lot of high frequency soundwaves so (just like everything else you're not supposed to do in the first trimester) you might want to be careful for the first 12 weeks what you expose it too.

nancy10 · 10/12/2010 11:33

I miscarried in April this year. I then got a BFP in August. I presumed they'd let me have a scan before the 12 week one. But in my area you are not referred for a scan unless you are showing signs of miscarrying with the current pregnancy. It was the longest wait ever but I'm now nearly 20 weeks so far so good!

headfairy · 10/12/2010 11:37

At St Georges in Tooting they're happy to scan you even if you never miscarried. They call them reassurance scans and you don't have to offer any reason for requesting one. Bloody marvellous I think, I had two miscarriages and when I was pg again I took myself there at 8 weeks and 10 weeks for some reassurance and they were so lovely I could have wept (actually, I did :o)

Janoschi · 12/12/2010 14:14

I lost my first baby at 9.5 weeks and was invited for a scan at 6.5 weeks with my second. They just wanted to check the heartbeat. Said if it was strong, there's a great chance of it going full term. I'm now at 17.3 weeks and so far it's going fine.

6.5 weeks was a little early but I live in the middle of nowhere and they only bring the scanner up from the city once a fortnight.

But you have to tell your midwife fairly early. I think I called them when I was 5 weeks.

Good luck!

bessie26 · 12/12/2010 21:23

Congratulations! Grin

I suspect it varies by region & by doctor.

My first mc was at 5wks & didn't get any special treatment with the next pg. When I mc that (at 8wks) the hospital told me to make sure my GP booked me in for an early scan at 6wks the next time.

I actually got one at 9wks - my GP said if I was desparate for an earlier scan we could lie & say I was experiencing pain & had seen some blood, but I decided against it - it seemed very rude to lie my way to the front of the queue, and as OP says, it's not like having the scan can actually make any difference to the final result! (I am now 22wks Grin)
