The 'pain' is a constant nagging, pulling.. Sometimes a sharp stab . I have read that it's ok as long as not accompanied by bleeding . I am not one to make a fuss but do you think I should be worried?

No. Your ligaments are all stretching etc. I got a lot of this with both pregnancies and it is entirely normal - although very uncomfortable sometimes. If you are still concerned, you should always ring your midwife who will be able to put your mind at rest.

Congratulations Smile.

Thanks norty, I havent seen the midwife yet so I don't really have any contact with anyone. I wish I could have a scan just to make sure it in the right place . Its such a long wait .!

I had constant, sometimes achey, sometimes sharp and often quite severe pain for the first few weeks. It didn't even occur to me that I was pg for ages as the pain was like period cramp so just assumed I was getting my period (and I usually get quite severe period pain). Everything was fine for me, I am now 35 weeks, but I did have an early scan at 6 weeks because of it. It can be very worrying, and obviously pain can be a sign of miscarriage, but I've also heard of lots of people who have had similar pain and been fine. Lots of poeple I've spoken to said it was particularly bad with first pgs and I guess this makes sense as your uterus and ligaments are stretching for the first time. I was told to take paracetamol and that using something like a hot water bottle is fine, as long as your don't get too overheated yourself.

P.S. I saw my GP, as I hadn't booked in with the MW yet either, who sent me just up the road to the walk-in emergency gynae unit at the hospital. Don't know if they'll have these everywhere as this was a specialist childrens hospital. Oh, and obviously if the pain gets incredibly severe or you feel unwell/there is bleeding treat it as an emergency and go to A&E. There is a small chance it could be ectopic but these are in fact very rare.

I was exactly the same. I was checking my pants constantly as I'd never known pain like it apart from the first day of a bad period so I was convinced it felt like I was bleeding - but I never did. And like I said I was fine in the end. Obviously there are no guaruntees and even after I'd had my scan which was fine with HB etc the sonographer was reluctant to reassure me that everything would then be fine, as obviously anything can happen in those early days and unfortunately there is not a lot you can do about it. I guess all I'm trying to say is that the pain can get quite severe without it necessarily being a miscarriage. Even bleeding in healthy pgs is not uncommon. So don't think the worst and keep fingers crossed. x

If the pain is so severe that taking two paracetamol doesn't help, go to A&E or your nearest Early Pregnancy Unit find your nearest one.

Chances are it's absolutely fine. But if it's genuinely unbearable and painkillers don't help you ought to get checked out, just in case.

KERALA1 · 09/12/2010 13:42

Agree with Muser our hospital has an Early Pregnancy Unit. Or pay for a private scan.

NormaStanleyFletcher · 09/12/2010 13:49

Get to the GP or the hospital, I agree with the others.

Pain can be a symptom of ectopic pregnancy.

Do you have shoulder tip pain or diarrhoea or dizziness?

KERALA1 · 09/12/2010 13:59

I didnt want to say ectopic pregnancy but it occurred to me too (totally unmedically trained but friend of friend had it). Go to hospital and start being assertive.

LittleMissNorty · 09/12/2010 14:14

Did you mean to type unbearable? If so, you need to be seen at the hospital.

Stetching pains are uncomfortable not unbearable

bishboschone · 09/12/2010 14:16

No need to be careful what you say a I would rather know the truth ..no dizziness ..how do I find out about getting a scan(paying)

If they really are that unbearable go to A&E. They will refer you for an early scan if the pain is severe as they will want to rule out an ectopic and you won't have to pay.

Muser · 09/12/2010 14:21

Yes, if the pain is severe don't hang about to go to a private clinic. Go to A&E.

bishboschone · 09/12/2010 14:26

No ,I meant v unconformable ,but I feel it is getting worse ..

orangepoo · 09/12/2010 14:31

I would go to A&E because they can check for an ectopic - no harm in getting it checked. But on the positive side, I was very uncomfortable being pregnant with both mine so it could still be fine.

GlitteryBalls · 09/12/2010 14:53

Also, if you're not necessarily concerned it's an ectopic and just want reassurance from a scan that everything is ok with the pg then even paying for a private scan won't necessarily do that. Often early scans can be quite inconclusive and you might not even see a HB even if the pg is in fact fine. And even if the scan is fine, anything could happen in the first 12 weeks. As I said, for many people "quite bad" pain is normal in early pg and it's a good sign that you're not bleeding as bleeding is likely with an ectopic. Either go in if its really bad, or just take some paracetamol and rest and TRY not to worry. My pain lasted til about 9-10 weeks, then I got round ligament pain at 13 weeks, and now I get tender spots around my belly button from all the stretching. You'll drive yourself mad with worry. If it gets really bad definitely get it checked out though.

bishboschone · 09/12/2010 15:17

Thank you gb,sound advice .. Peoples pain tolerances are so different so it's tricky to tell how bad it is.. Will see how I go ..thanks all

Good luck hope it turns out to be nothing.

bishboschone · 10/12/2010 12:28

Ok, I went to the doctors and in his opinion it's unlikely to be ectopic..he is going to get me a scan to be on the safe side .thanks ladies
