Maternity clothes for cold weather

Im 31 weeks and the mat clothes I have got are just not warm enough for this weather!

It hardly seems worth spending a lot now but I really need a warm coat, jumpers that will fit under it and a pair of pjs.

my long smart wool winter coat will not do up, but it hardly seems worth buying a maternity one as only have 10 days left at work.

I have been sleeping in maternity nighties but they are not warm enough. all the maternity pjs I have seen are under the bump which is not going to work for me - I need ones that will keep the bump warm.

Have you considered thermals? You can wear them after too - they will be under bump, but if you have over bump jeans you won't notice. And a big thick long scarf or poncho/shawl over coat.

I got some really comfy stretchy pale pink pj bottoms from asda for £8, they had them in black too. They arnt maternity but stretch over. Or how about primark in a large size?

Depends on what size clothes you are, as I am plus size I cant do the old thing of buying a few sizes bigger but you maybe luckier and find that you can.

I think with some of the styles of tunic tops out there now you can wear them after the pregnancy as well.

I have moved the buttons on my coat and now can do it up so maybe thats an option?

All the PJs I have seen as well are under bump so I have warn maternity leggins from H&M and nighties.

I bought a fab pair of over the bump jeans from H&M and then bought a load of long jumpers in bigger sizes from Primark which I live all the time now I've finished work. Got a few bits of ebay too, really good bargains. And my coat I bought a military style coat from Asda for £18 and just bought it 3 sizes bigger then I'd normally buy and its perfect

Have you tried bump bands? I'm only 21 weeks so really not sure about whether they work in later pregnancy, but they do come in different sizes so they might.

I got some for £5 each from Topshop and I swear I'm going to wear them every winter for the rest of my life as they are keeping my middle lovely and snug.

Your husband's clothes? I am 30 weeks and I sometimes sleep in my husband's jumpers.

Coat - I'll probably buy one though - even if you don't go to work you will still want to go out from time to time! There's still 9 weeks of winter left for you!

It was many years ago the I was pregnant but I bought some cheapish men's clothes toward the end of the pregnancy so I could layer-up in the cold weather.

I'm surprised maternity clothes aren't better these days.

I still have a couple of giant men's fleeces that I bought as coats (think I got them at Primark) when my normal coat wouldn't do up anymore - I use them for gardening in cold weather!

cowboylover I can't believe I never thought of moving the buttons on my coat. Brilliant! Will dig the sewing kit out tonight. This should save me a fortune!

Hi Im only 16 weeks but finding a similar problem. Im in between at the moment so my normal clothes are too small but maternity ones hang off me! I've bought a few jumpers in bigger sizes, but Im going out for a friends birthday this weekend and everything I have that fits is either far too cold or big jumpers that make me look a total mess! Any ideas? Sorry for hijacking your thread!

Get on Ebay - cheapy cheapy, and maternity clothes are usually in good condition second hand as they're not worn for very long by previous owners.

Zara has some lovely long jumper dresses - get a size bigger.

this was my investment piece when preg and I lived in it. It's like wearing a blanket. still wear it now and can wrap it around 8wo DS too.

Primark do brushed cotton PJs for £4. I bought 12-14 (I'm in maternity size 10) and they fit me perfectly at nearly 26 weeks.

I bought the black padded Mamalicious coat from Asos - £60.00. Its absolutley fantastic for this cold weather, has a really nice collar, belt and drawstring hem. Wool coats just don't cut it in this weather...

I'm borrowing a coat from my mum that's a few sizes bigger than I usually wear - do you have any friends/relatives who take bigger size clothes who might be able to lend you some old ones for a few weeks? I've stolen one of my partner's old baggy jumpers to wear with thermal leggings as pyjamas too

How about a cape? You could wear that afterwards and very "this season".

Glad I'm not the only one having this problem. I was shocked how many shops have maternity ranges but don't sell coats or warm jumpers.

Oh and try American websites as they do a greater range and have plus maternity sizes. I think I saw a lot on Old Navy. No idea how much shipping is though.

glad i'm not the only one having this problem - I've managed to get one maternity jumper from H&M, but it is still a bit too big for me, so looks a bit rubbish, but I am getting a bit too big for my regular clothes.

I got some cheapo thermal PJs from Tescos, just bought a bigger size top & figure that if/when the top stops fitting, I'll start wearing the cheapo nightdresses I bought to give birth in over the top.

I got a coat from Sainsbury's for £30 (this style - i don't know what it's called) - am well chuffed with that as I got it in my usual size so I can wear it again! If I get too big for it (I'm due in April) I plan to wear some of DH's jackets.

I haven't got any bump bands, but last pg I had some jeans with a big elasticated waist band on & they were lovely for keeping my middle all warm, so I might have to get some...

I just don't understand why maternity shops don't sell coats. OK, this winter is exceptionally cold, but it's not as if we're accustomed to a tropical climate. Even in normal years, I need a proper winter coat from October onwards.

The only places I've found that stock anything remotely suitable are H&M and Top Shop. H&M have a black wool coat, but I only ever see one or two on the rack and in L or XL, which is way too big for me. Top Shop have a coat and a cape, but neither was really "me".

I have family coming from America for Xmas, so I've ordered a coat from motherhood.com and they're going to bring it over. I was salivating over that website. How nice to see a shop with a real selection of coats meant for this weather!

At 34 weeks I am wearing last year's winter coat held closed in the middle with a giant nappy pin! Then a big woolly scarf over the middle to cover the gap - and hide the pin! Coats are so expensive and I really don't want to have to buy a new one now.
However, I am a bit worried about how long it will take to go back to a 'somewhat' normal shape after giving birth...? Would it be worth just buying more warm maternity clothes becuase the likelihood is I'll be in them all winter even after having baby?

I am having the same thought as you (32 weeks) about buying more clothes as will still be in "fat clothes" until spring (4th trimester and all that).

I bought some cheap, plus size PJs in Asda but am regretting it now as the tops are horrid cheap scratchy cotton jersey and completely seethrough so have to wear a cami or crop top underneath. ho hum!

I bought giant sized fleeces and velour pants from Decathalon (size xxl) and they are a life saver. I am 33 weeks pregnant with twins and normally a size 16. I can get them on over the bump and do up the fleece jacket as it's stretchy. Cheapo too and useful after the birth I think as the pants have drawstring waists as well as elastic.

just spotted a Maternity black military coat on DotP online - £60 (free delivery this weekend)

and a couple of jackets and at least three jumpers at New Look!!

I am 20 weeks and have bought nearly all my maternity clothes from Ebay! It's great for mummies-to-be..bought a couple of dresses for the party season both only costing a fiver each!! As far as a coat goes, didn't want to splash out on a specific maternity brand- so just bought a cape instead from Primark. Very cheap and stylish, plus can be worn after pregnancy too. Have found that the best over the bump jeans are from H&M, at £30 quid a pair they're not to dear.
