Blood sugar test in early pregnancy

My blood tests have come back (this included a non-fasting blood sugar test) and I've been told I need to take a fasting blood sugar test as soon as possible. I'm ten weeks pregnant. Has anyone else had this?

Not really worried, just a bit curious as to the reason. I have had PCOS symptoms before, if that makes a difference.

Well I had GD (gestational diabetes) in my last pregnancy but it was only picked up at 39+4. This time they tested at 12 weeks and it came up positive again.

I would guess they are testing for GD as maybe your random blood glucose was high?

I wondered if they were testing for GD, too, but I thought it was only picked up later. My googling tells me after 20 or so weeks?

Thanks for your input, Silly. Was your GD difficult to manage?

Oh sorry - just reread your post. Long day and am not concentrating.

That's very interesting they picked it up earlier. I guess you were hyper aware of it after your first pgy.

Will be prepared but not much point in worrying about it until the test I guess.

Hi. I was told this after a non-fasting blood test at about 11 weeks. The high glucose level slipped through the net initially. They told me a five weeks later and asked me what I had eaten in the couple of hours before the test...!?! Obviously I had no idea so they referred me for a fasting blood test, which was normal.

Riddzy · 06/12/2010 18:49

Haha. I can hardly remember what I had for breakfast, let alone meals I ate over a month ago!

Glad you got a normal result.

I had it last time and had it again.came back positive at about 12 weeks. Just diet controlled last time and hopefully this time also. does not have to be a big deal but keep a dialogue going with the specialist midwife or consultant about how you want to manage it and what it might mean for the birth - usually repeat growth scans and induction early or on due date to stop baby getting to large which can create complications at delivery

Blood sugar would likely change throughout pregnancy. I was tested for BS at 12 weeks. This test has to be done as a fasting blood test, however, in my experience you actually have to remind them this...

I had one done at 8 weeks but it was fine. I have to have one at 28 weeks anyway as I have a high bmi.

Just had this done and I was below whatever the danger level is, but will need to be tested again a bit later just to keep an eye out. Thanks for everyone's input, appreciated.
