Help,

I thought at this stage the bowel movemnts will swing everything in the opposite direction. But not with me. Given Lactulose solution by midwife. Is it safe? it says on the sticker not to use without consulting a doctor if pregnant or breastfeeding.

has anybody else been in my shoes? Any cure? I've been eating fruits and fiber rich cereals but no success so far!

I was bad with constipation after birth tried lactulose and loads of fresh orange but I found that SunnyD was the one thing that worked. honest

eidsvold · 25/09/2005 10:54

Have you been having lots of fluid - the fibre rich is good but you need lots of water to go with it. I have a gloop recipe if you would like that works wonders with dd1.

flamebat · 25/09/2005 10:55

I had milk of magnesia which seemed to shift everything (I was trying to start labour at the time though, so coul dhave jus been labour that shifted it )

spykid · 25/09/2005 11:33

green bug, my sympathies.
I was exactly the same in last few weeks and practically drank lactulose!!
It helped a little but the only thing that really worked was going into labour!!!!

while i was preggie with last baby dr put me onto iron tabs which always constipate me so he then put me onto parachoc - its a form of paraffin. very gentle. fine while pregnant.

nervousmum2be · 25/09/2005 13:09

I sympathise, having suffered with this myself a few weeks ago. The lovely ladies on MN recommnended lactulose, and drinking a glass of apple juice every morning, both of which i can definitely recommend! HTH.

dandycandyjellybean · 25/09/2005 15:34

I have been taking massive doses of Vit c for weeks now (4-5000 mg daily) in addition to loads of fruit, veg and cereal, which just about seems to be keeping the promised constipation at bay. Having said that, my body is used to fairly high doses pre-pregnancy, so perhaps don't start that high straight away. Hope it helps.

hello ladies, thank you for all your replies.... going into labour would be the ideal solutions cos i am well ready to get this baby out in the world. I have this nightmarish thought now that i'd need to go to the loo while in labour. would i be allowed? if i do would the baby drop and i'd have to catch it? .... as you can tell first pg! my mw told me that the staff at the hospital have seen it all which made me even more worried. I want to go to labour with empty bowels!

eidsvold, I'd like to have a go at your recipe!
nervousmum2be, off to get the apple juice to go with the lactulose.
eidsvold, i am eating prunes with loads of loads of water..... LOADS of water!!!

1 ripe pear - peeled, cored, chopped, 3 pitted prunes and teaspoon of dark born sugar - add a little water - stew it gently - when everything soft - puree it. Have given it to dd1 in yoghurt or watered it down further as a drink.

eidsvold · 27/09/2005 00:12

that should be dark brown sugar

greenbug · 28/09/2005 18:07

Cheers eidsvold, sounds yammie ... have done the pears and prunes on their own with loads of water. my dh now sleeps downstairs on the sofa as the farts are too much to bear.... due date today and no sign of baby wanting to come out so I am officially an unbearable misserable strop.

I'm going to get a reputation for saying this but I'm going to say it (again!) anyway ...

Glycerine suppositories. Perfectly safe in pregnancy, and almost guaranteed to work where everything else has failed. Takes about 10 minutes to work and is very, very effective. You can buy a box in Superdrug for less than a pound.
