I am not a bg drinker but I just wondered if the guidelines had changed since I had dd 7 years ago.

I think the best possible preparation for being pg is to read MN. I joined about a year ago and I have learned loads

Thanks for the reality check SGB. If I get pg it'll be ok - financial issues mean DH isn't keen right now but y'know, we'll
survive. Everything else is fine. He accepts our lack of contraception means it's possible.

I have to say as well I got totally pissed one night with DS2, going through a bad time relationship wise, ex having an affair under my nose and making me feel as though being paranoid then blaming me for being pregnant as though it was all me. I was totally depressed and confused, and ashamed to say did things, I shouldn't. But it was a one off, and I was about 4 months at the time. And DS2 is perfectly fine so its not the end of the world. I think they tell mums to be, to avoid/limit it as there are some that would go overboard and think its ok to drink a bottle a night. I think its more heavy drinking regularly you have to watch out for which isn't good whether preg or not. But the same as drug addicts, it won't make a difference to some.

But look at those that do all sorts and don't even know until last minute they are pregnant and go onto have healthy babies :)

As I said up there I have baileys in hot choc, maybe every couple nights, but its only about cm baileys at most, but probably will have glass wine xmas day, but having said that, I only drink low alcohol anyway. It just doesn't appeal to me much until I can't have it lol.

I have a drink every now and then. Have to be careful with cocktails though as sometimes they're quite strong!

A bottle of standard wine is between 9 and 10 units, so I generally work on the premise that 75mls of wine is 1 unit.

Like others have said, the NHS are unlikly to change the current guidlines from abstinece and that's purely because a lot of people don't understand units or what moderation in realation to alcohol use means!

What about in the first trimester? I haven't touched alcohol since I got a BFP but have a friend visiting tomorrow and would love a glass of red wine with her... Will this harm me?

tlise · 02/12/2010 23:41

a small glass no, a bottle size glass, I wouldn't recommend :)

4 units or more in a session is medically considered a binge. And that's 1.5 - 2 typical glasses of wine.

So one small glass is okay, according to the evidence, but 2 is pushing it.

It's regularly doing that, especially in the first trimester, that is most harmful.

FWIW the odd person saying "I did it and was fine" means nothing. Hmm
