aibu to think the pots they give you to wee in are, well, too narrow to wee in?!

Now I know how men feel when they 'miss the target'. Does anyone actually manage to wee in them without it going down the sides?!

zippy at my last appt I got mine back, still full of wee, AND a new one - jackpot!

BiscuitNibbler · 26/11/2010 08:52

I used to use a jug and transfer it, however once I couldn't find the pot and so in desperation used an old mint sauce jar (which incidentally was very easy to pee into) however I was v embarrassed when I turned up to find it wasn't my usual midwife and there was also a student midwife there.

angels1 · 26/11/2010 10:46

We don't even get a carboard pot when I go to mw appoinments - we have to wave the testing strip straight into the wee whilst on the loo! The bit I hate it handing this wet with wee stick into the hands of my mw every time Blush Shock

tlise · 26/11/2010 15:24

I used to be able to....then put weight on with each preg and now I can't even see the blooming thing when its under me let alone pee in it lol. I keep a jug to one side just for that :) think I prefer doing that than using just a stick....that would be.....well like nellie the elephant trying to pee on a stick with her eyes closed :o

pissovski · 26/11/2010 21:38

Another one here who has this issue! Those ridiculously narrow sample bottles are just awful. I remember Victoria Wood doing a sketch about them. She said they must really only be suitable for men - we women 'have the necessary engine capacity, but lack the fine tuning' which i think sums it up!

My sample bottle is always wrapped in masses of loo rolls to try to keep it dry ish (doesn't work but does at least keep my fingers and bottle slightly dryer)but i think i may be resorting to the POAS container and decanting in future!

busybee20 · 27/11/2010 12:37

At my hospital they have plastic cups next to the urine containers, so I just wee into the cup and pour into the bottle. This gave me the idea to buy some disposable cups for home, so I do it at home and take it with me as I don't like using hospital loo unless I'm bursting!! :)

MrsMogwai · 27/11/2010 15:42

I'm another one who wees into a plastic cup and decants. If someone tried to give me back a used sample pot, I'd be spouting all sorts of Infection Control Policy back at them! My Trust is by no means swimming in it, but I always made sure we have the basics in our clinic room. Won't compromise on that!!

GlitteryBalls · 28/11/2010 10:44

I had a UTI once that meant it was really hard to wee, and when I did it was a dribble and it hurt. The (very scary woman) GP gave me a pot, and the ones they give you when you ahev a suspected infection are not the usual, slightly bigger, yellow lidded ones, but a tiny, thin, test tube style one with a red lid. I went to the loo, managed to squeeze out a tiny dribble that missed the pot completely and COULDN'T do any more! I was running the taps, downing water from my bag etc etc but I couldn't wee any more. About 15 minutes later I went back with about 1mm in the bottom of this pot. She just rolled her eyes and looked at me like I was an idiot ... Blush

mixedmamameansbusiness · 28/11/2010 17:02

i take the pots home and when i have an appoitment i wee in a jug and then pour it in. They are unreasonably ridiculous.

JustKeepSparkling · 28/11/2010 19:30

Glittery - had the same once, minus the dribble. The look i got when i said i just couldn't go.

Can't remember if i got a prescription or not that time, just remember that awful feeling of not being able to go no matter what i tried.

Armi · 28/11/2010 20:12

I had my first midwife appointment on Saturday and before going I'd read this thread, so I was filled with trepidation. I was all set to perform all sorts of urinary contortions but there was no need in the end - I was presented with a disposable jug-type thing to pee in, which I could then use to fill the dreaded tube. I'm pleased to report it all went swimmingly - although I did nearly drop the (full) jug on the loo floor when decanting, which would have been mildly embarrassing.

Look what pregnancy has reduced me to - I'm delighted because I managed to get pee into a tube. I could weep.

GlitteryBalls · 28/11/2010 20:49

I did still manage get a prescription that time. It was just about enough to dip with one of those stick with lots of little coloured boxes on it - but she had to bend the stick so she could dip the right bit of the stick in the tiny amount of pee in the bottom. Was quite funny watching her tutting at me, trying to do that! She could see from this alone that I did have an infection apparently (does it pick up protein in your wee or something?) but she said it may not be enough for the lab to do their proper tests on, and that I may need to come back if they sent it back. Never heard anything though so I guess it all worked out in the end! Grin

KickArseQueen · 28/11/2010 20:59

It doesn't need to be sterile, just clean catch, Ironically my m/wife alway used to get me to pee on a stick and I never had a problem with it Grin

And I have to say, for those of you freaking at the m/wife touching the outside of the pot without gloves - its only wee.

The other day in the space of 10 mins I had been weed, sneezed and crapped on by 3 of my children, > yep, still alive :)

My Nan aged 96 used to wee in the washing up bowl scoop it into the pot and give it a good rinse before she did the washing up Shock Now that is worrying!!!!!

JustKeepSparkling · 29/11/2010 08:46

I have added to the worry by thinking i'm sure they don't want a full pot so have even poured some out, then worried it's not enough, so had to catch some more Blush
Pg brain i blame for losing all sense of proportion!

KickArseQueen · 29/11/2010 19:04

Oh! and!! If you are worried about aq midwife touching a probably rinsed bottle have a thought for your toothbrush Wink Its amazing how far urine can travel when you flush the loo! Shock Like lots of ladies on MN my toothbrush lives inside the cupboard.

JustKeepSparkling · 29/11/2010 20:29

KickArse - ? wtf? i think i need to know more but really don't want to!!

KickArseQueen · 29/11/2010 21:19

When you flush the loo it aspirates, and a nice urine and / feaces laden plume coats any nearby surfaces. It can be checked with urine revealing chemicals. look here

GlitteryBalls · 30/11/2010 10:18

Yes. Always close the lid when you flush, and always keep your toothbrush at a fair distance/in a cupboard.

Alternatively, live dangerously and jsut don't read articles like that! x

KickArseQueen · 02/12/2010 22:26

LOL!!! The trouble is that once you know, you know!!!Xmas Grin

JustKeepSparkling · 03/12/2010 09:32

KickArse - i think i'll be forever thinking of you & wee-splattered walls now, thanks!

I always close the lid before i flush, that would help right?

Of course DH & DS1 don't though. Am filled with eeuuww thoughts everytime i go for a wee (which is a lots as i'm pg)!!

StiffyByng · 03/12/2010 19:51

All my samples have come back with raised protein levels, which is apparently because of cross-contamination with discharge. I suspect this is made worse because I can only get the wee in by pressing the tube right up against me!

KickArseQueen · 04/12/2010 12:43

Stiffybyng, You are supposed to get a mid stream catch, so start weeing and then dip the container into the flow, easy peasy not!! Use something else to catch your wee and then tip it in. At least your midwife hasn't told you it was cross contmination from your piles as my friend was recently told....and then posted on FB!!!!!!Xmas Shock

JKS!! Xmas Grin

CaringForPod · 06/12/2010 08:47

I'm thinking of investing in a she-wee, glad I'm not the only one who finds the pots ridiculous! I always present such a pitiful sample to the midwife and feel the need to apologise.
