I've been put on metoclopramide on week 5 and I am on week 8 now and still suffering. Is it worth asking my go for different medicines or is there no point as they are all the same? Please those with experience can you advise? I already feel guilty taking medicines but I don't know how much more of this I can take

I'm not really sure about different medications. I was on cyclizine and it did work a bit for me - limited the vomiting to once a day or so, although I still felt nauseous and generally dreadful most of the time. I think I'd be tempted to try something else if you're still being sick all of the time - my doctor said that if they get the medication right you should be able to get to the point where you can just about get on with daily life, albeit that you may not feel very well. Don't feel guilty about taking something, hyperemesis is awful, it was the most miserable 3 months of my life. I felt just the same about taking the drugs (and I left it too late to get help and ended up in hospital with dehydration), but got lots of reassurance on here . If it gives you some hope, mine passed at about 17 weeks and I'm now feeling absolutely great.

Different people find different things helpful - personally I know metoclopramide works better for me than cyclizine (although that was postop vomiting rather than hyperemesis).

If I were you I would mention it to your Dr and try to get something else.

Hope you feel better soon x

I wouldn't class myself as having hyperemisis, but I was vomiting up to a dozen times a day in a previous pregnancy. No medication worked, so I just gave up in the end and forced myself to eat and drink whatever I could.

When I had my last hospital appointment (this pregnancy) there was a lady there who was sat shaking uncontrollably and although she was trying to sip water, she was sick half a dozen times in the 30 minutes we were sat there. Goodness only knows why the nurses didn't find her a side room or something! Anyway, her Mum was talking to us and said she had been on a drip 16 times this pregnancy (not sure how far along she was, but she was extremely slim and not showing yet) and had been given thre types of medication, including steroids.

Maybe see your midwife or GP about different meds?

I haven't really got anything to say - I second everything GrumpyFish said - but I just wanted to offer sympathy. I am also about 8 weeks and was diagnosed with HG a couple of weeks ago. I'm taking Stemetil and this has meant I can keep liquid and some food down and at least look after my DS(2.6). I still feel incredibly rough and very miserable, but compared to before the meds, when I couldn't keep water down, it's still an improvement.

Don't feel guilty about the meds - it's better for your baby that serious dehydration. Take care.

There are lots of different types of medication you can try so don't give up! Hopefully your GP will know the options but if not, this website has a list of the medication types available: helpher. It's a US site but all the meds are available here too.

I'm taking ondansetron (brand name Zofran) wafers that melt on your tongue so you don't need to be able to keep down water to take them. They are the only thing that work for me after trying many others. They stop me vommitting and needing IV rehydration, but unfortunately don't really take away the nausea.

Best of luck finding something that helps you.
