Had thrush around same time when pg with DS and used the pessary with no problems - didn't even take medical advice...however, this time around I'm more twitchy about going ahead and using it

Bought the Canesten combi and from googling, loads of people have used it in pg, just not with the applicator

Rang pharmacy just too see what they would say and they said no, only use it on prescription....I think they are just covering their backs

Cannot be faffed with making Drs appt etc, although will do if I need to obv, so thought I would see what advice I can get here

I got given the canisten combi by my midwife a couple of weeks ago

Mumcah · 14/11/2010 14:12

I had to get my combi from the Dr for the same reasons,so bloody annoying!
Why not get your partner or someone to go and buy it for you?

The Dr said don't use the applicator just push it in with your finger Grin

i got the pessary from my midwife but she removed the pessary and gave me a pair of surgical gloves instead [sceptical]

GruffalosGirl · 14/11/2010 15:56

My GP said it was fine to use the pessary last month at 18 weeks

FessaEst · 14/11/2010 16:10

I had horrendous thrush in pg, and had the combi twice. I used the pessary, GP said to just be gentle. It worked a treat -good luck.

Also, you can get a pinky chalky discharge after using it.

my GP says canestan fine in pg - I was told to use it at 5 weeks pg and then have had to sporadically at various intervals afterwards (every time has been OKed by GP). Am now 26 weeks and have used pessary about 5 times and cream quite often. Not sure why chemists not allowed to sell it to pg women without prescription but I know they can't. I had to get my mum to buy it for me once when GP surgery closed and I could wait no longer to use it! My GP just says to be careful when inserting it and not use applicator and not stick it too highly in.

CrazyPlateLady · 14/11/2010 19:16

My GP said you only shouldn't use the pessary if you have a low lying placenta.

GruffalosGirl · 15/11/2010 14:59

Crap, what can it do if you have a low lying placenta? I have a low lying placenta and used it at 18 weeks (didn't know at the time). Do I need to be worrying?

CrazyPlateLady · 15/11/2010 19:43

I don't know what it can do I'm afraid. As I don't have one my doctor just checked that with me and said I was to to use it but I can't remember what she said the reason was for not using it with a low lying placenta. Not sure if it was something to do with possibly 'knocking' it?

You could give your MW a ring and ask.

BrassicaBabe · 15/11/2010 19:47

It's pesky that so many people getting differing advice. I'm just 4 weeks Blush and bought it from the pharmacist at the weekend. He knew I was pg, looked it up in his formulary book and sold it to me with no additional advice. He said the only no-no was the oral tablet one.

Yeah, my first post in "pregnancy"! Grin

CrazyPlateLady · 15/11/2010 19:52

See I have seen numerous posts that say you aren't suppose to be sold thrush treatment when pregnant without a prescription!

GruffalosGirl · 15/11/2010 20:03

I think I'll just ring my MW tomorrow and clear it up to ease my worrying - I'll feed back what she says

PussinJimmyChoos · 15/11/2010 20:21

Midwife said it was fine to use but if it came back, to see the Dr - fair enough

Mind you, penises go further up than pessaries and you can still have sex when pg....
