Early scan - nothing in uterus and fluid in tube

Hi,

I got my BFP on Sat 30th Oct after no periods since Aug so am unsure about my dates but think I am around 5 weeks. Had an early scan today (as was on clomid and due to dating query) and the nurse couldn't see anything in my uterus. She also said I have one fallopian tube that is full of fluid. I have never been told I have fluid in either of my tubes before and am not really sure of what this means. Also I am panicking that they didn't see anything there. I thought tat after 5 weks they should be able to at least see a sac, or is this incorrect? They have taken blood to check my hcg levels (haven't yet phoned me with the results) and I have to go back on Friday to see if the levels have doubled. I am a complete wreck and in a complete panic. This is my first pregnancy in 7 years, the last one ended in a mmc. We have been waiting for this BFP for more than 18 months and I am terrified to think that there is something wrong. Can anybody give me any answers or reassurance?

I can't help you I am afraid but I am sorry you are going through this. I can totally understand why you are be panicking. Did she rule out an ectopic?

highheelsandequations · 10/11/2010 16:40

She couldn't see anything in the tubes but I don't know if an ectopic is completely ruled out. She did have a good look around the tubes checking for anything.

I cant give any advice I'm afraid but I hope everything is ok. xxx

highheels I also had fluid in one of my tubes when I had a scan at 7+5. The sonographer said it was nothing to worry about and carried no increased risk of miscarriage. I don't think she gave me an explanation for why they checked it! But don't take my word for it - why not give the EPU a call and ask them to explain what they found. I quite often think of questions once the heat of the moment has passed and its too late!

My experience with early scans (I've had a few, all at UCLH) is that they always look at the ovaries and the tubes and record what they find there, whether its relevant to the pregnancy or not.

I'm afraid I can't help with your other question about what should be visible at 5 weeks. Really good luck.

Thanks for the well wishes ladies and crochet it's very reassuring to hear that about the fluid, thank you.

I don't know if you're in london highheels but if you're worried and confused perhaps it might be worth booking a private scan at somewhere like the FMC? I had two scans within a day of each other when I was 7 weeks pg, (for inexplicable reasons!) the NHS one was very vague, the private one was brilliant, I think that their machines were much more sensitive.

Costs about £120, I found it to be well worth the money to find out what was going on.

I hope everything works out well for you, I have everything crossed.

sorry to hear this highheels. It is possible to have a five week ectopic and not be able to see it. I had a scan at about eight weeks with very very low hcg and they still dont' really know, but treated it as ectopic.

midori1999 · 10/11/2010 19:39

I don't know about the fluid in the tube, but I had a scan yesterday at 5+2 and the sonographer doing the scan said that they don't usually scan at all at that EPU before six weeks as you can't always see anything and it can cause more worry than not. They did scan me but told me it would be completely normal to see nothing and not to worry if that was the case. As it happens, they did see a gestational sack and a yolk, but the sonographer seemed suprised.

I also know of someone who had a possible ectopic and was scanned a couple of times between 4 and 6 weeks. At her six week scan they saw the heart beat, but prior to that had seen nothing.

banana87 · 10/11/2010 21:30

I agree that they usually cannot see anything at 5 weeks so not suprising. I am guessing they are going to re-scan in a week? Best of luck.

booyhoo · 10/11/2010 21:32

5 weeks is really early to scan. i had a scan at 7 weeks and even then the GP said "don't be surprised if you don't see anything". the feotus is really small at that stage.

TransatlanticCityGirl · 10/11/2010 21:37

in fact, it's not even a feotus at that stage, it's an embryo (or even blastocyst depending on when you ovulate!!)
sorry i don't mean to get caught up in semantics. I know the OP is worried.. just remember it's very early days. fingers crossed for you.

booyhoo · 10/11/2010 21:39

apologies. i am not au fait on ages and stages at that point in pregnancy. thanks trans
