V. High BMI - unintentional weight loss, a good thing?!

Am 18 weeks pg and have managed (without trying, have just got smaller appetite since about week 4 and, most importantly, lost my sweet tooth!) to lose a pound from my booking in weight - before that, I lost about 7 pounds (partly before I knew I was pg and partly due to sickness).

Surely this is a good thing? Diet still varied, eating healthily (most of the time) but managing (for now) to stay on top of weight gain. Not sure what would be normal for now, anyway, but fairly sure with DD, I was eating almost anything in sight by this stage!

Am sure MW etc would say not to try to lose weight, but for the first time ever, I'm not trying!! (BMI is over 35 BTW)

I have a high BMI. When I was pregnant, I didn't put on any weight until the last 6 weeks. Even then, I only put on about a stone, which I lost (plus another 8lbs, within 3 weeks of dd being born).

I wasn't trying to lose weight, but I just had a very heightened sense of wanting to eat all the right things.

It's fine to lose weight when you're pregnant. My midwife said it was fine too. It will benefit your baby if you weigh less. As long as you're eating well with a balanced diet it's fine. If you look at what a healthy weight for your height is and then add 2 stone-just don't go below that.

Lots of women overeat because of messed up hormones- pregnancy can sort that out.

Amazing, thanks - long may it last!! I was told not to try, but at my considerable weight, I can't see the harm that would be done!!!

In the same. Am 13 weeks today and have lost half a stone since I found out I was pregnant. Not intentionally just a smaller appetite! I too have a very high bmi so don't see this as a bad thing as long as your still eating the right stuff, lots of fruit and veg and giving bubba all the good stuff it needs!

I'm the same. Only a little overweight with a BMI of 25 but now at 29 weeks I'm still 4lbs lighter than at my booking in appointment. Hoping it doesn't all suddenly pile on now!

I shouldn't worry to much, particularly if you are eating healthy. I had to have surgery when 20 weeks pregnant and in the 9 days I was in hospital I lost 1.5stones and no one seemed concerned!!

I was 122kg when I was pregnant with my now 18 year old son.. during that pregnancy I lost 3 stones and a little bit more afterwards. The hospital were fine about it so long as I was eating well and healthily.

He was ok too.. was 8lbs at birth :)

I lost about half a stone in the first 9 weeks due to no appetite and sickness, then another couple of pounds in the few weeks following. Have now started gaining again (am 26 weeks) and am back to just a couple of pounds over my pre-pregnancy weight.

You're not supposed to actively diet (as in drastically reduce calories, eat ryvitas and cottage cheese and half a lettuce leaf etc.) during pg, but for a lot of people, the sense of needing to eat healthily, stopping drinking alcohol, sickness early on, and for me, the sense of not wanting to fall into the trap of eating for two, means that it doesn't seem to be unusual that some people lose a bit of weight or at least don't gain, especially early on.

I would have thought as long as you are eating healthily and drinking plenty of fluids then you should be fine.

I have a friend who did WW during pregnancy (they have a programme developed for pregnant women) and she was lighter just before she had him than she was at the start of pregnancy. So although silly crash diets are not suitable, I think you can lose weight in pregnancy in a healthy way - and I would have thought medical staff would fully support this given the risks they keep on highlighting to obese mothers.

I was/am a big girl!! I lost a fair amount of weight at the start of my pregnancy _ in fact people at work (who didn't then know I was pregnant) were asking if I was dieiting as I looked slimmer. By the end I was only a pound or two over my pre pregnancy weight and only needed maternity clothes at the last minute, due to shape change rather than size. I hadn't tried to lose weight and was eating very well. Midwife says it happens sometimes and as everything else was fine they were not worried. I'm sure your MW/doctor will let you know if they are concerned.
