Hi - is anyone having a hard time in their pregnancy ?? I am 13 weeks pregnant and after having DD1 I have continued to read books that say I cannot eat peanuts, liver, pate, strong cheeses, shell fish etc and I am well down in the dumps and absolutely craving for them all !!! NOW !!!!!

It's not that sort of soft cheese!! It's things like brie and camenbert. Cheesecake is cream cheese which is something different.

hunkermunker · 18/09/2005 11:42

Twisters are fine, honestly. It's the soft ice cream from the ice cream man you need to watch for because of a small food poisoning risk. But packaged lollies, unless they've melted and refrozen are OK, and you'd not eat them melted and refrozen if you weren't pg!

Cheesecake is also fine. It's soft cheese with a mould rind you can't eat (like Brie).

Scoff away

jessicaandbumpsmummy · 18/09/2005 11:42

NOTHING wrong with whippy ice-cream either - ate it all the way through with Jess with no problems, and have had a few this time round - in moderation its fine!

munz · 18/09/2005 11:44

ooooooooooooooooooooooh u girls! ((((((hugs)))))) ooooooooooh thanks! gonna have to get to the super market now - been fancying one of those for about 2 months, and eggs are ok.. ((((hugs)))) oooooh could kiss u all!

lol.

hunkermunker · 18/09/2005 11:44

JABM, there is a slight risk of food poisoning from whippy ice cream, that's all. Like there's a slight risk of food poisoning from shellfish, etc. Some people choose to take that risk, others don't.

jessicaandbumpsmummy · 18/09/2005 11:45

yeah, i relaise that, but surely there is a small risk regardless of whether you are pg or not?!

hunkermunker · 18/09/2005 11:46

Yes. But food poisoning can do horrible things to unborn babies. Which is a risk you don't run when not pg!

jessicaandbumpsmummy · 18/09/2005 11:47

i guess - all up to the individual then! I have eaten it and been fine, but i will say i avoid skanky looking ice cream vans!

hunkermunker · 18/09/2005 11:47

I don't like ice cream vans really...never sure whether the ice cream man's washed his hands

hunkermunker · 18/09/2005 11:48

Munz...don't come back here next week complaining you've put on an extra stone in Twister lollies and cheesecake, OK?

munz · 18/09/2005 11:48

yes agree with that my little cousin had FP from a mr wippy icey, poor thing was only about 3/4, she was really bad - won't have ice cream now outside unless it's from a wrapper.

jessicaandbumpsmummy · 18/09/2005 11:48

lol.... but i just cant resist when i hear that tune coming down the road!

Moomin · 18/09/2005 12:44

Have to say I've eaten a bit of Brie (from supermarket but did refuse some proper smelly stuff from the French market); whippy ice cream and peanuts this pg. The peanuts thing is that they should be avoided if you or your family have history of allergies. Have also eaten prawns.

sweetheart · 18/09/2005 19:12

There's nothing wrong with cheesecake!!! Or twister ice lollies!!!

It's ok to eat peanuts unless your family has a history of allergies.

I've also eaten Brie as you can get stuff from the supermarkets now which is pasturized!!

YOu can eat pate in a tin, provided you are past the first three months. Just don't go mad.
Runny eggs fine now - no salmonella in eggs any more. Get the lion marked ones. Peanuts fine unless you have a nut allergy.
I personally didn't think the (minute) listeria risk from brie etc was worth it, but then I don't really like brie. But any cheese is fine if cooked until piping hot, eg totally melted on toast, pizza or in a sauce, which might help with cravings.

morningpaper · 18/09/2005 19:21

Only things I've avoided are the really DODGY ones like shellfish, sushi past it's sell-by date etc....

colditz · 18/09/2005 19:23

i thought pate was a vitamin A thing?

aloha · 18/09/2005 19:25

Pate is a 'vitamin A thing' if it is made of liver, but there isn't problem with vit A in the latter stages of pregnancy as the baby is fully formed by then. It is also a listeria thing, and the canning process means that listeria isn't a problem as the pate is sterile.

colditz · 18/09/2005 19:26

Ohhhhhhhhhhh I've been lied to!!!!

Love pate, and glad to know I can eat some in a few weeks

Frizbe · 18/09/2005 19:29

But only the canned stuff colditz!
Cheesecake like said below is also fine, just check its baked!

munz · 19/09/2005 09:02

do u mean the little potted cheese cakes u can get in tescos? thats the ones I normally have.

had my twister lolly - it was lovely! lol.

aloha · 19/09/2005 09:07

Cream cheese is absolutely fine! Eat as much as you like.

As for vit A, I would probably go easyish on pate, but by the time you get past the first three months everything is formed so it isn't a problem. And it should be canned, otherwise it may contain listeria.

Nemo1977 · 19/09/2005 09:14

Ive been having cheesecake too...lol Poor munz at least you found out now rather than going without everything for 9mths..lol As I say its only choccie peanuts for me that is killing me but the ashtma and allergies dictate..even though ds doesnt seem to have either I have it so no go until babe is out. Allergy isnt even to nuts but other stuff

munz · 19/09/2005 09:37

yes true enough nemo least i found out now - gonna buy some in the shopping and thoughally enjoy them - might even have a soft eggy! lol (could u suck the choclate off the peanuts? - or how about nutella a small tub of it? - not the same that thou is it?)
