Hi

Im 39w+3days - for the last few weeks baby has been head down and ROA - great I thought as my DD1 was posterior position and I had really awful, slow back labour.

Today at my appointment this one has now turned back to back - is there anything I can do or is it too late? I have been doing lots of down on all fours stuff (my floors are sparkling !) to no avail.

Thanks

Rebecca

Becca, I wouldn't worry too much, I'm 1 day overdue mow and depending on how I'm lay or sat, sometimes I can feel the baby's back has 'gone' from the side it usually occupies and my tummy feels strangely squashy. I think that is when he has turned 'back to back' with me. But he soon goes back to his usual position.
BH are meant to help the baby get into position for birth aren't they? Why not try getting on all fours every time you have one to help them turn the baby (not always possible I know, esp. if in Tesco at the time! )

Hi Becca, My baby was like this right up until my due date, but turned towards the end. My husband broke his leg five days before my due date and my time was completely taken up with looking after him etc. I forgot all about the position of the baby and getting down on all fours!! When I did go into labour they told me the baby was in the right position, so all that rushing around probably helped. My advice is just to keep as active as possible. It worked for me!!!

Avoid sitting slumped on a sofa - sit in a well supporting chair with your back straight. When you slump the baby has more space to lie 'back to back'. Try not too worry too much - baies often move and since you are doing the all fours thing already it hopefully won't stay in that position for much longer.

Becca,
My MW said the baby can move right at the last minute, even when you are labour, so don't get too worried. It's also supposed to be good to sit on a chair backwards. Not very sexy to look at when you're in our condition, and it does feel quite strange, but not that unconfortable. So get straddling a dining chair!!!

Certainly true that baby can turn at the last minute - mine was in the right position when they induced me but 10 hours later when I'd been pushing for 3 hours they discovered he was now back to back.... (hooray for epidurals and forceps...).

Look on the 'turning baby round' thread for other views on this. Good luck.

My last baby was back to back in the final week and he turned round into the usual position too. Try not to worry - there's not much you can do about it anyway! Hope it all goes well.

bluecow · 19/08/2003 12:41

Hope babe does move cos you don't want a back to back labour - bleeping excruciating. Acupuncture and osteopathy are apparently very good at turning babies.

Becca, if you feel up to it, try walking as much as possible, worked for me.
Good luck

Scrubbing the kitchen floor on hands and knees gets you in the right position for baby to possibly turn

Beccaroll · 20/08/2003 14:47

My floors have never been cleaner or more thoroughly cleaned! Instead of the usual run over with they dyson then mopped. I have been getting down and doing it by hand with a cloth then over it again to dry it!! Plan to do this every day (have laminate floor all downstairs) and hopefully baby will flip over!

I have a birth ball too that I havent really used so far so think Ill get that out and sit on it when possible!

I used to kneel on the floor leaning on my birth ball to watch TV in the evening. Not as comfy as slouching in the sofa but it did the trick.

Kneeling on all fours worked for me - wasn't the most comfortable position at the time, and I didn't do it for long, but it definately helped.
