thirsty

Before you say, I know thirst can be a symptom of GT, but I don't think this is particualrly excessive (more frustrating/anoying).

Does anyone else feel thirsty alot?

Pre preg I drank alot of water a day, about 15 big glasses, which was probably 3 if not more litres a day.

When morning sickness struck I could barely drink at all - maybe managed 5 glasses on a good day. My thirst has been gradually increasing back to its normal level, and, now at 24 weeks I probably average at about 10 big glasses a day of water. If I do less than this I get bad headaches, but this isn't unusual - I got this (assume it's dehydration, DH is the same) pre preg.

I feel thirsty alot, but I think that's as I have to space out my drinking more than pre preg as my stomach can't fit masses of water in like pre preg and I now try not to drink with meals to help the heartburn. I often feel like I want to drink more but I know it just won't fit inside!! I also end out not drinking much when I go out so when I get home I feel like I need to catch up, which is tricky when I can't fit much in!!

I wonder if increased thirst can be just a normal pg thing (or at least dry back of mouth thirst feeling)

How many weeks are you? Early on, (I'm 39 weeks now) I remember being soooooo thirsty all the time. Think it is called something like cotton wool mouth? I had to carry drink with me at all times and used to panic if I didn't have access to fluids!

angels1 · 04/11/2010 16:56

24 weeks now, so not exactly early...

Angels, I've been really thirsty. I usually drink 4 or 5 pints of water as well as other drinks during the day. I've been like this since the ms went. I'm hoping it's fairly normal!

ICantGetMuchSleep · 04/11/2010 21:42

Just searched for cotton wool mouth and discovered it is a fish illness! haha. I don't think it is something just associated with early pregnancy, I just meant I had it earlier on and then it went.

in pregnancy I got unquenshable thirst
now Im Bfing I get thirsty but it's not the same as pregnancy.

one day I think i drank 4 litres ( it was v hot but still)

angels1 · 05/11/2010 08:02

glad I'm not the only one then. I read in a pg book the other day that when bfing you need an extra 9 glasses of water a day and started to wonder how I'd even fit that many glasses in a day!

icantgetmuchsleep I think I had a fish once that had cotton wool mouth disease Shock

Logged on this morning to ask exactly the same Q Angels. I'm also 24 weeks and in the last week have extremely thirsty but any underline condition has been ruled out.

angels1 · 05/11/2010 10:37

maybe it's another odd hormone thing then!

Hi angels , I'm also v thirsty a lot of the time, and lots of my pregnant and previously pregnant friends have said the same, so I'm sure it's fairly normal, which I have also read in a number of books. As you say it's possible it could be a sign of GD but could equally just be pregnancy (one of the problems a lot of books say about spotting GD is that the symptoms - weeing a lot, thirst and up and down energy levels) are just normal pregnancy symptoms anyway, so that answers your question I think!

I'm really bad at drinking enough at the right time though. I tend not to drink enough during the day, then get home from work and realise I'm really thirsty, spend all evening drinking water and then all night getting up to go to the loo.

I am also quite thirsty. It is normal. Need to be careful though during late 3rd trimester as too much liquid could put a lot on strain on kidneys, and one might suffer from a significant water retention which is not advisable...

NewbieT · 05/11/2010 10:59

I am regularly drinking 4-5 litres a day (29+4) and drink 1-2 pints through the night, too. My urine is checked regularly by midwife / gp and just had some more blood tests, all seems to be normal touch wood!

I read that it is to do with all the extra blood volume you're building up.

Also, at my last MW appt she said the baby's heartrate was slightly increased on the time before - she advised me to drink more water as this can be a sign of deydration - although then the baby kicked her doppler a couple of times and she said it was probably just increased as it was being active - is important to keep hydrated thought!

angels1 · 05/11/2010 11:01

Is water retention related to how much water you drink then lily ? I have bad water retention (have mentioned to mw, she's not worried) and maybe all this water I'm drinking is making it worse!

As far as I know, drinking water actually eases water retention . If you're dehydrated your cells 'hold on' to water more, thus increasing swelling.

RoxieP · 05/11/2010 11:36

Your blood volume increases and your kidneys are working hard to filter all that blood so I reckon it's natural to feel more thirsty. I've heard you wee loads after birth when you're getting rid of all that extra fluid from your blood, and all that's accumulated around your ankles etc! A lot of weight you gain when pregnant is fluid retention (well that's what I keep telling myself any way...). Your boady will hold onto fluid in pregnancy naturally, regardless of how much you drink. You just pee out the excess.

I've been dead thirsty too - when I was first pregnant I craved ribena and drank GALLONS of it. Now I seem to prefer just water. And my urine etc is always fine so no sign of GD...
