Morning/All Day Sickness - does it hit a peak?

gillykins2011 · 04/11/2010 13:43

8 weeks today and have felt grim and been sick twice a day for the last 2.5 weeks. am trying to work out how long this is gonna last....

Do the pregnancy hormones that cause this hit a peak at some point? If so, does anyone know when?

Also, does it tend to stop overnight or just wear off gradually?

When I read this back, I know I look like a control freak so sorry......

I think it's different for everyone - sometimes it stops overnight at 9 weeks, other times it can go on and on...

I felt pretty rough weeks 7&8, then again at 12/13 weeks. It started easing off for me at 18 weeks and was gone by 20, but LOTS of other people say it has gone by 12 weeks.

Hope you feel better soon.

Im afraid that you won't get an answer to this one, I would love to know the answer too! With my first it was 16 weeks, I've just passed that point with my second and it's not improving much yet. It's pretty rotten though and I feel for you, especially if you are trying to keep it a secret - I gave up on that, it was too hard to pretend I wasn't feeling like death warmed up!
If it gets too hard to cope with make sure you see your doctor, they can give you medication that helps with the nausea. It didn't help me but other friends have said it was a lifesaver for them. What I'd love is a good nights sleep, there's NOTHING they can give you for that sadly! All the best and I hope you feel better soon.

Seeline · 04/11/2010 16:22

GG - there is! I was given phenergan for my morning(!) sickness which was fantastic, and had the added bonus of turning me into a zombie so sleep was no problem at all!!

GretnaGirl · 04/11/2010 16:36

Thanks for that, if the sleep problems continue might go and ask about that, having a 2 1/2 year old to look after might be tough as a zombie though!

gillykins2011 · 04/11/2010 17:05

GretnaGirl - snap. I have a just 3 year old and he doesn't understand the meaning of sitting quietly and nor do I trust myself not to fall asleep when I am 'lyin down for a moment'.

At the moment, I have had a stomach bug with various sets of people for the last few weeks and then had to go into hospital for a day as I started to bleed so just said i had something personal.

Hope yours disappears soon. I haven't been sick today - felt awful but haven't actually vomited so here's hoping....

GretnaGirl · 04/11/2010 17:45

Gillykins - I managed not to vomint this morning, but have felt awful most of the day but thanks to a fantastic childminder I had no little person to worry about for a few hours. I am very lucky in that respect. I am struggling with ante-natal depression and I think it's the medication for that that is making me still feel so sick but who knows!
I hope you have some help with your little one? They are so demanding at this age, just so keen to be busy and doing something all the time - lying on the couch is not a fun game apparently!
I had a slight bleed too, very early on but luckily nothing since, I hope it's the same for you too.

gillykins2011 · 04/11/2010 22:34

Gretnagirl I still haven't worked out if it is better to vomit and then you feel better or lie down still and stop it happening aa then you feel awful all day? Yesterday I spent all day trying not to be sick only to go upstairs to bed and the movement made me vomit for ages and then I wished I'd just been sick earlier in the day! Awful thread i know....

Lucikly I have nursery and so ds is inmthere full time at the moment and dh is being my saviour so I am incredibly lucky really. Take care....

my all day sickness peaked around 5 -6 weeks then again during weeks 10-13, got better by week 14 and has been managable since about week 17.

Im now 21 weeks and don't suffer from any nausea, in fact I am really hungry all the time, and making up for not eating for 3 months. I occasionally gag when i eat too much have heartburn but thats about it.

I hope is passes for you soon, it's awful at the time x

GretnaGirl · 05/11/2010 08:54

Thanks Fairybubbles, so there may be light at the end of the tunnel and I may yet enjoy my Christmas dinner!
Gillykins - I try not to be sick as I find the empty tummy feeling just as bad and then can't sleep, it's a vicious circle isn't it!
My little one just been collected by his Grandad, it's a huge relief when he goes and I can lie back down but then I have 9 hours stretching ahead of me with only the TV for company. I feel too weak and tired for work though, I'd probably be a danger on the roads!

LoubyLoubyLouLa · 05/11/2010 10:24

I am sorry to be the bearer of bad news but I'm lying in bed feeling sooooooooo sick and I'm 39 weeks...

Nausea has not left me for one day in this pregnancy, although I haven't actually thrown up since about 24 weeks.

GretnaGirl · 05/11/2010 12:35

Oh dear Louby, I'm so sorry to hear that, you poor thing. I have a friend who was the same, she did say however that the minute she gave birth she felt better and slept for 10 hours solid and woke up feeling great. Has it spoilt the excitement for you of being a Mum? Did you miss a lot of work? I'm really worried about coping with a new baby and a nearly 3 year old - silly I know because one baby is here I won't be pregnant anymore but I've almost forgotten what it feels like to be well and have energy.
Not long til your big day, I hope you feel much better very soon. x

GretnaGirl · 05/11/2010 12:36

*once baby is here I meant...

LoubyLoubyLouLa · 05/11/2010 19:57

I say that too 'i cant remember what it is like to feel normal'. I am lucky that I am a sahm and my daughter is at preschool 4 mornings and my dh works from home and has been great allowing me to lay on the sofa a lot!

lowra · 05/11/2010 20:30

For me the sickness stopped fairly abruptly at 12-13 weeks. Although some people are sick much longer I think it's more common for it to disapear at around this time.

Hope you feel better soon x

Danilou22 · 05/11/2010 20:35

I am only 6 weeks and have spent the last two feeling so so so sick and dizzy and exhausted and rather pathetic really. I am a nursery teacher and have 50 3-4 year olds to cope with each day. Thank goodness for my fantastic teaching assistant!

gertiegrimble · 05/11/2010 20:48

I know the feeling, my sickness with dd2 was so bad i was in hospital on and off for 8 weeks, they had to rehydrate me and they also gave lots of sickness meds but nothing worked, was sick all through pregnancy, even after dd was born!!DH had to have weeks off work to look after dd1, very supportive employer, thankfully. I did eventually find food that i could tollerate and the sickness became less frequent, perhaps just once a day instead of all day. I was overweight before i fell pregnant, upside of sickness was that i weighed less at 9mths pregnant than i did before i fell pregnant!

nameymcnamechange · 05/11/2010 20:56

As everyone else says, all experiences are different. But I would say that it is more intense and more difficult to cope with and more misery-inducing before 12 weeks. That could be partly psychological because once you get to the 12 week scan and see that all is well you do start to relax a bit and you can begin to tell people like friends and work colleagues.

I do know that I couldn't drink a cup of tea or coffee or a glass of wine up to 16 weeks pg but, once I could face a cup of tea again, then I did start to feel a little bit more human.

The slightly sick feeling didn't actually disappear until 40+5 (ie. til after the birth!) with my first child, sorry to say.

julesmacd · 12/11/2010 18:03

its slightly depressing but mostly reassuring to hear of everyone having had similar nausea and sickness. I'm 11 weeks and finding it difficult to be exctied or do anything else cos its all day everyday.

Nice to know you're not alone!

kitten30 · 12/11/2010 19:26

Mine started at week 4 I would say it was at its worst from week 8-10 but carried on until week 17. I would cry every night thinking it would never end .. I am 38 weeks tomorrow and feel rather queasy but I think this is due to a UTI. I hope yours eases off but everyone told me 12 weeks and it would go but it didnt. It eased off gradually from week 16 and by weeks 17 was getting much less.

With DD, I felt constantly nauseous (but not actually vomiting)from 6-11 weeks and then it was like someone flipped a switch and I felt great, it just went.

This time, feeling rotten was the first indicator that I was pregnant at 5 weeks but it disappeared last week and I noticed I was feeling much better (12 weeks). Till Sunday, when I suddenly felt terrible and this week has been awful - vomiting every morning so it seems to be getting worse.

Glad I got a wee break though, as it was really strating to get me down. I'm sure vomiting in the shower every morning will start to grate soon too, but I do at least feel a bit better for a while after I have thrown up.

littlemiss72 · 13/11/2010 09:23

Praise the lord I'm not alone Grin I've been feeling bad since wk 5 at 8 now and have lost half a stone! I really don't know how I'm making it to and from work each day in this state. I can only eat fruit salad now and cooking smells have me running for the hills.
