yes, it's normal to get some days of loads of movement and some days of hardly any. i remember with #1 i kept prodding bump until he moved.

but if your worried ring the midwife. Just to be on the safe side.

I'm in the same boat! Last week the baby was moving so much it felt like it was doing somersaults and crazy stuff, but for the last couple of days it's just been the odd little dink...

RoxieP · 01/11/2010 20:11

I'm 30 weeks btw...

It's worrying isn't it? Even if it's normal I find it so reassuring when baby moves round that it panics me when he/she isn't moving! Think I'll phone the midwife tomrw to see what she says. Hope all works out well for you! Take care and keep us posted! x

I think when the baby is still relatively small it can move into a position where you feel movements a bit less. For example if its legs and arms are inwards you may not feel those little jabs as much. I had days like that earlier on where I went mad worrying about it. I rang the hospital when I was 27 weeks (I think) and they said they can't even do a trace (to monitor movements) at that point as they're still quite little but you can always have the hear beat monitored.

I'd say if you're worried at any stage, get your midwife to listen in.

I'm seeing midwife Wednesday so I'll ask her! They always said to call if I don't feel at least 10 movements a day - and I'm definitely feeling more than that - just fewer than there were, and not as strong...

I've been ill too - and have been taking a cocktail of medications - all necessary, prescribed, and all safe to take when pregnant but a part of me worries that the illness/drugs may affect baby in some way (sickness virus followed by UTI) - though I know I'm probably just being silly!

Good luck to you too. x

A friend of mine has told me that drinking a glass of icey water will help stimulate movement! Not an old wive's tale - it was something a doctor told her, when she'd gone into hospital with concerns that the baby had stopped moving one morning...

Well I pohned this morning and they were fab- told me to go in this afternoon and hooked me up to monitoring machine. All was fine and i also got to listen to heartbeat for the full half hour too. Definitely worth phoning if you're at all worried! x

Went to midwife yesterday and heartbeat was very strong and good speed so all is well! I'm still not feeling as much movement as I did and it's definitely weaker, but midwife says it may have been that the baby has shifted - or that it is kicking into the placenta which means I won't feel it as strong. They said that as long as I am feeling 10 definite movements a day it's fine. They also said that as I was off sick all last week I was probably more aware of the movements but now I am more active and back at work I am less aware and rocking the baby to sleep as I move! Though actually I first noticed less movement while I was still in bed ill...

And no the ice water thing isn't an old wives tale - the midwife told me to do it - drink a large glass of cold water in one go and wait! Tried it and it didn't really work for me though! Just meant I was up weeing all night! Supposedly the baby can feel the cold as it goes down and tries to move away from it...

Its good to hear you've had some reassurance too roxiep
Its such an exciting but also scary time isn't it?
I'm really tempted to invest in one of those heart monitors like you see on Mothercare now but then I think that might make me even more obsessive! Smile

I thought about getting one too! I never thought I'd be so neurotic. What made me worse was reading about Lily Allen. It just didn't occur to me that there would really be any risk later on. Also, I read somewhere that she had a viral infection beforehand which really made me worry as I was really ill last week with a vomiting virus and UTI, and the movement changed when I was getting over that.

I don't know, I think these babies are a lot more resilient than we realise! Some women go through loads during pregnancy and the babies are fine! Obviously tragedies do occur but I think this is often just down to horrible bad luck and not anything external.

I'm TRYING to stop worrying so much! Yes it is exciting but scary - but I thought I'd got over the scary part after the 12 week scan! Glad you've been reassured too - let me know if you buy monitor!
