I have 4 cats and I was cleaning up what I thought was water (it didnt smell too bad) when halfway through I realised the cat had peed on the stone floor. I quickly went and wwashed my hands with anti bacterial soap and really hot water but then I realised I had a paper cut on my pinkie of the hand I was cleaning with. I phoned the mw and she said just come in for a blood test, and I phoned the vet who said as far as she knew it was just the cat poo that carried toxoplasmosis. But I ma still worried to death. I am nearly 17 weeks pregnant, please help :(

It is only cat poo that carries toxo I really wouldn't worry about it it can't do any harm toyou or baby. By all means go for a blood test if it will reassure you but there's no need :-)

Thanks, I just got a bit panicky and thought I should phone the mw, but she scared the c**p outta me by saying "come in for a blood test straight away"!!! Confused

Your midwife probably doesn't have a clue and is covering herself. But a blood test is pointless anyway, it wouldn't show toxo up a few hours after contact! Really don't worry, there's nothing in cat pee which will harm you or your baby.

If you've got 4 acts it'll be a miracle if you haven't already had toxo and developed immunity to it anyway :)

Thanks, I read that it doesnt shoe up for like 3 weeks if I had caught it anyway, so as you say, a blood test "straight away" would have been pointless!! I phoned the main hospital pau, and the head midwife there told me I can't catch it from cat pee, and I would have to eat soil from the garden or cat poop to have a chance of catching it anyway! She said not to worry at all, so I feel a bit better. No thanks to my community flippin' midwife!
Thank you for replying :)

I know it's been sorted but as the owner of two cats myself I am similarly paranoid, you're not alone!

In actual fact my cousin found out she had it when pregnant with her second child and she doesn't even own cats. She had a stressful few weeks but I'm glad to say baby was perfectly healthy and is now a robust two and a half year old.

It can be dangerous but careful monitoring and catching it early means it's not always the worst case scenario.

Like I say, it can only be caught from actual cat poop rather than urine. Like if I had changed its litter tray and the cat was activley shedding the virus (they can only catch it once in their life and when they poop when they have it the poop isn't infectious until 24 hours+ later), or if I had been gardening and put my hands in soil where an infected cat had done the toilet and I hadn't washed my hands and then put them in my mouth. You supposedly have more chance of catching it from eating raw/undercooked meat, which is where most cases of toxo are caught (is it 9 out of 10).
I think I just panicked, hence my phone calls to both the mw and the vet, but I guess always better to make sure and put your mind at rest :)
