Hello! On Monday just gone, I started to get a browny discharge. The Dr sent me to the EPU dept at the local hospital as I have a heart shaped uterus, also know as a bicornuate uterus. The scan unfortunatly showed up an empty sac, with no fetal pole etc. I have looked this up on the net and found this can be known as a Blighted Ovum. 6 days on, I am now losing what i can only describe as a prune juice type discharge (sorry if its TMI), I have not lost any blood at all. I have all the pregnancy symptoms, the sickness being the worse, which is making this even harder to endure if I am not actually pregnant. Has anyone else gone through this? many thanks..

Really sorry to hear this. Firstly what has the hospital said to you and how early on are you? are they asking you to come back to confirm? If it is very early on then there may not anything to see yet?

If it is a BO then I've had two so know how hard it is!

Mine were only picked up at scans, first at 12 weeks, 2nd at 9weeks. Both had what was a black empty sac. I had the bit of brown discharge (although didn't really pick up on first time round) but never had the prune juice type discharge or bleeding. My hospital referred to them as missed miscarriages.

I found it very hard to go through at the time, think it would have been easier to deal with of my body had dealt with itself. And yes you do still get the symptoms although not sure how far gone you are?. Sorry if TMI but if it helps then think I was told at the time that when cells split at start, one side is supposed to form the fetus (but for whatever reason doesn't in this case!), the other the sac etc and it takes some time for the body to catch up with the fact that there is nothing in the sac - and it is the sac that produces the hormones. If it helps I was also told the reason for BO's is random and no reason for it to happen again.

If it is the same then I had two ERPC ops under general which was best option for me rather than waiting for body to catchup - was admitted day or so after BO was identified. Once hormones had settled down then I started to feel much better. Give yourself plenty of time!

I simply can't thank you enough for replying and so sorry to hear that you have gone through this too, and twice.

If I go by the scan I am 6 weeks. The hospital want me to go back in 2 weeks time (which is next friday), but to be honest I am struggling so much with the nauseous/ sickness and being a good mum to my 7yr old daughter, I think I might just take myself back on Monday morning and ask if I can have the scan a few days earlier. If this isn't a viable pregnancy I simply want out, so I can concentrate on looking after her. My husband is away a lot with work at the moment, so very much coping with this on my own, which is proving very hard this weekend.

Please don't apologise for the TMI.. its comforting to know the ins and outs. If it turns out to be a BO, then I will be able to deal with it head on, hopefully!

Thank you again x

Hi. If you are 6 weeks then very early and they may not be anything to see yet, often can't see anything properly either way until about 8/9 weeks weeks which was when they agreed to scan me the second time round and clearly what they are saying to you.

They won't confirm anything until after 8 weeks really as fetal pole etc to small to see before then so will be a case of just waiting I think - even though it is really hard! Good luck! x
