underwired bras

When are you supposed to stop wearing under-wired bras?

I'm 16wks & my "normal" bras won't fit me for much longer & I was wondering if I could continue to buy nice under-wired bras or if I have to start wearing boring maternity bras yet?

well they say you shouldn't wear them at all in pregnancy! I did both times, and when my usual ones got too small I just bought bigger underwired ones! My boobs were fine and breastfeeding was no problem..... (I did wear the horrible breastfeeding bras after birth though - yuk yuk yuk)

i went to bravissimo when i outgrew my bras at 16 weeks - they said i could have underwired ones but in a bigger cup size so i have more room to grow.

Tried maternity bras but they are about as useful and flattering as a chocolate teapot!

I also went to Bravissimo and was advised that underwired is fine as long as the bra fits properly. They said that the only reason pregnant women are advised not to wear wired bras is that a lot of women tend to wear the wrong size (pregnant or not). So as long as it fits properly its fine!

I started wearning non-wired bras by about 6-8 weeks as my boobs were growing at an alarming rate and my pretty wired ones were digging in. Being an E cup normally I was concerned about support in non-wired but by buying sturdy, stretchy ones from John Lewis I've not had a problem (some of them are kinda pretty too!). I think I've grown since getting my last bra but there's more give in the non-wired ones so I've not needed to get new ones since (I'm now 21+5).

I can't wear non-wired - have you looked at the Anita underwired bras (they are on Figleaves and other places). I think they are brilliant.

I'm a 32 HH cup to begin with - BEFORE I got pregnant - there's no way I'm losing my underwire!!

Bravissimo do a nice soft brushed cotton one that's nice - if your underwire fits you correctly then it should sit on your ribs - the only reason underwires are avoided is in case they are ill fitting and block your milk ducts.

If I didn't wear an underwire, mine would be by my knees!!

If it fits perfectly, it's fine. The issues for many women are that 1, they may not get properly fitted at all (esp. as some high street stores do such bad fitting!) and 2, if your breasts are growing fast, you'll spend a fortune to stay in a perfectly fitted bra, whereas soft cup bras can be fitted with more growing room.

Having now seen three different (experienced) bra fitters and asked two (even more experienced) midwives... Underwire is fine as long as it doesn't press on your breast tissue - ie get well fitted.

I went from 32B to 32DD by week 12, at week 22 weeks I am now a 34E - admit it's not cheap but I like looking good near-naked!!! Also, my tip is to get fitted at somewhere good (Rigby & Peller are great, but I've also done Agent Provocateur and John Lewis without buying anything) and then go to Primark (or similar) and buy the right size... Don't get me started on anyone who brings out a tape measure to fit you - M&S are appalling. There was a thread about this before and at least three of us complained about M&S having no idea (twice they've measured me two / three sizes too small...)

By the way, from a (usually!) very small (ie flat Grin ) chested girl - all of you who are better endowed have my sympathy - it's really hard getting nice bras. I always thought I was hard done by but now I see how easy it was compared...
