Anyone else having lots of hip pain in night?

I am 35 weeks and during the night I wake every hour or so needing to change sides as my hips are in agony. Just wondering if this is normal or has something to do with my SPD? Anyone else finding it very hard to sleep as it is painful?

I remember this well! And the Queen Mary-style rolling over. I didn't have SPD but I think it's the weight of us leaning on such a small bit. I have no advice I'm sorry! :(

When I was pg, this was my single biggest problem. I didn't have SPD but I could not sleep for more than 1.5 h in my bed without getting agonising hip pressure pain from about 30w on. So I ended up sleeping on the couch (an old, saggy studio couch) with 2 folded duvets under me to make it as soft as possible and that just about dealt with it most nights. I think having the back support helped too, tbh. Some nights I used a pillow between my legs, others not - can't honestly remember whether or not it made much difference.

HTH anyway.

hi sorry havnt really got any advice only i get the same hip pain and it was from 35 ish weeks too. iv seen mw who has said she doesnt think its spd and at this late stage i wont get physio appt either! just having to put up with it. it does help to take it easy each day but my 3yo still needs seeing to. have you actually got spd then? if so i would guess its down to that. not nice though when there is still weeks ahead. i thought maybe baby had dropped but hadnt, may be the case for you though. sorry not alot of help.

Thanks Ladies, I was wondering if this was a common pregnancy complaint. I have a tiny waist and a huge bump and so the physics of it all kind of made me think it would probably be the case for most women. Great news as it means it will go when he is born (if it was SPD I could still have it after the birth for a while)..thank goodness for that. Us women, we do suffer!

I'm 30 weeks, I have this too. I'm pretty sure it's the SPD, I'm on crutches with it.
I think the pillow between the knees helps, although mine slips out while I'm asleep and I end up in pain anyway.
So hard to sleep Sad

ilovefirefighters Yes I have SPD and walking is a huge problem now. I started with symptoms of it at 14 weeks and I had never even heard of SPD I just knew getting dressed and getting in and out of the car were really painful. By now (35 weeks) my mobility is pretty much limited that I cant really leave the house. The hip thing I wondered if it was part of it all but glad to hear its not. To be honest you are not missing much with a physio appointment I havent found it to be much help really other than providing practical advice which you could find out yourself.

I've got spd too and my hips are agony through the night. Not slept properly in WEEKS! suffering with shocking cramps in my right calf too, real scream in pain. I have to get my DH to get me up as I can't move fast enough to get my feet flat on the floor. Sorry I can't give you any useful advice, but that you're not alone.

Oh, am using a big body pillow to try and prop my leg up but my hips still ache.

lennon80 · 26/10/2010 21:31

Lexxity.. ah god its awful isnt it! At least it is preparing us for the sleepless nights ahead. Just hope it goes after the birth! Its sooooo painful!

Yep. I got one of those NASA mattresses (just a cheap one to go on top of the bed) - made all the difference.

Those leg cramps are awful. My husband used to wet his hand (spit) and put it on the cramp area - magic!

minimuffy · 26/10/2010 21:44

me too! im 36 weeks, so glad to hear that other people have it too- not that im happy other people are in pain, but y'know glad im not the only one!

havnt found anything that helps yet tho :( plus the restless legs are still an issue!

lennon80 · 26/10/2010 22:02

The only thing that helps me is to change sides..which I have to do as otherwise I wont fall back asleep..then about one to two hours max later I wake up in pain again with the urgent desire to turn..try to turn quickly forgetting I cant..click click click..my hips..followed by me moaning in pain. :-( Gosh I thought it was only me too.

I tried a 2" memory foam topper on my bed - while DH loved it, it did SFA for me - but it might work for you. Certainly having extra padding was necessary, and as I said in my previous post, I really think the back support made a big difference because I could lean back into it and take the pressure off the hip, iyswim. Maybe getting a big bolster pillow to lean against would help?

Hi i suffer with hip pain at night, along with SPD and round ligament pain Sad.
I have found i sleep on my side with a pillow half under my bump that supports the weight of my bump a little and also a pillow between my knees's too which takes some of the pressure of my hips.
I have a disabled daughter with displaced hips and when she lays on her side i have to do the same for her (advice from an OT) to help support her hips.
It does actually help me quite a bit though, takes a bit of positioning with the two pillows but has really helped.
That said sometimes i wake up at night feeling smothered with pillows as they usually end up round my neck at some point during the night Blush
The pillow just under part of my bump really takes some of the weight of my hips though so might be worth a try.
I have a dream pregnancy pillow thing but i think any would do a similar job Smile
