Numb fingertips (middle finger)

Had numb fingers and a touch of what is probably carpel tunnel early in pregnancy which disappeared quickly. Is now coming back though just in tips of middle fingers. Is a pain for typing - driving seems to be okay though. Anyone else have this and any suggestions for managing it. Am 33 weeks.

I have this - numb/ tingly feelings in middle three fingers. Also hands go numb easily eg at night. I spoke to a Dr friend about this at the weekend and she said there is not much you can do. If it is bad or painful then gp can give you a wrist splint to wear. Otherwise treatment is surgery, which obviously they don't do for pg women. I have had it for a few weeks now and to be honest have not found much to relieve it, other than rest. It's v annoying so if anyone has a cure would love to hear it!

This sounds like Carpel Tunnel syndrome. It happens when your hands swell. I've developed this over the past week or so too (am 37 wks). My mum has had it for years and her solutions are:

  • Get a hand/wrist brace. You can buy these from Boots for 17 quid. They are specificly for carpel tunnel and have a piece of metal/plastic in to stop your wrist moving around. Mine seems to be worse in the morning when I wake up (it is quite painful and hurts to clench your fists) so, if you can, wear the brace in bed. If you don't go mad and rip it off in the night, it really does help. If not, just wear it in the day.
  • I've found having DH give me a hand massage really relieves the pain/numbness.
  • As it is a result of swelling, plunge your hand(s) into cold water /hold frozen peas onto wrists to reduce the swelling.

Midwife told me it should go within a week of two of having the baby.

Hope all this helps [hsmile]
