Do you know what's causing them? Dehydration, low blood sugar, caffeine withdrawal, neck tension, plain ol' hormones...?

Paracetamol is generally considered okay in pregnancy (ibuprofen is NOT) and some caffeine can often help, especially if you may have them because of giving it up. Maybe try having some food and a strong cup of tea?

hiya, ive been getting them ever since finding out i was pregnant, like really bad it thumps pounds and feels like my head is been crushed, i get them most days, and havent got a clue whats causing it, my mw says its probably due to hormones, but im not so sure

Me too! Had terrible headaches which I think were migraines, have to go to bed, make sure the room is cool and dark and not be disturbed. They are so horrible. I am now 11+4 and (touch wood) I haven't had one for week so I am really hoping they have gone away...sorry you are suffering also, I feel your pain.

Yes - I have rather long pg history and my first sign every time is a migraine followed by a few weeks of headaches. I've been told it is all hormonal but to be honest if I stay very hydrated and dont let my blood sugars fluctuate too much (avoid big meals, keep them small and often) they generally dont get out of control. The tempation to reach for the ibuprofen is almost overwhelming when they are bad but japhrimel is right, a small cup of coffee can also help greatly or if you arent happy doing that, a square of dark chocolate has also helped me in the past. I also seem to get eye strain alot more when pg - could it be that?

Hopefully will pass soon, the sickness started today (actual being sick) oh the joys lol

Hi Bethan37 I've had occasional headaches throughout my life, but have been getting them more in pregnancy.

The main difference is that they used to just last a day, whereas they now drag on for three.

I believe it can be okay to take co-codamol (which contains codeine) but you should probably check with your GP first. You can buy it over the counter but you can only take it for short periods.

It helps me sleep when I'm in a headachey period.

I console myself by thinking that, while my headaches are horrible, they seem to be the natural result of hormones. Like, nothing is 'wrong' they're just a hassle. That helps me stay sane :)

I've been having horrendous headaches too. At first I didn't think they were due to dehydration as I drink a lot of water anyway. However, if I drink 2 litres of water (on TOP of normal comsumption) when a headache comes on they go away after an hour. I find that paracetamol do nothing for these headaches, only water helps. Otherwise the headaches last for days.

P.S. My friend told me in some areas pregnany women are told it's fine to have ibuprofen. Here we are told paracetamol only.

Have you had migraines before? I think these can sometimes come on for the first time in pregnancy, might be worth seeing your GP if the headaches are severe. I've had migraines since I was a child, but they got tons worse in early pregnancy - getting a bit better now, at 19 weeks, but I'm still getting about one a week. They feel like an awful headache, with confusion/exhaustion, nausea and sometimes being sick (some people get disturbed vision too). If they're more like a normal tension headache, I second everything above, especially the water, plus getting a bit of fresh air/exercise might help a bit? Sorry you've been suffering, headaches can be horrible - hope you feel better soon.
