rocking chair for nursery?

Has anyone bought a rocking chair for their nursery?

I have some fond memories of the one my Mom had when I was little, and would really like one.

After searching the only thing I can find are the 'glider chairs'. I was thinking more about an old fashioned rocking chair.

Are these glider chairs the same? Are they any good? Can anyone recommenda anything?

Thanks

I had an old fashioned wooden rocking chair.
It looked lovely, but was the most uncomfortable thing to sit in.
I don't have one of those glider chairs, but used one at a friends house a few times, and would thoroughly recommend it!

I have an old fashioned wooden rocking chair I inherited it from my grandma. I had it re-upholstered added some extra cushions so it was very comfortable and great for night feeds.

Although if I hadn't had one already I would probably have gone with a glider chair.

We have ordered a glider chair - they feel lovely, especially with a gliding footstool.

I've got a glider rocking chair and footstool in the nursery, (am 32 weeks) and used it with my DTD's - its heaven! Thoroughly recommend them!

I have a glider chair and it is lovely to sit on BUT really difficult to clean! You can't remove the covers! They all seem to be like this - I cannot understand it for the life of me!

We got the bog-standard Ikea rocking chair. It's done us fine and is waaaaay cheaper than the glider thingies. Although having had a go on one of them I must admit they are lovelier and definitely built for the job.

Wigeon · 24/10/2010 20:19

We bought one of these Ikea armchairs for £59 - it has a really nice little bounce so you can sort of rock in it. The glider chairs are loads more expensive, but they are really really comfy.

Glider chairs are fantastic. Got one from John Lewis. They're not cheap but they are an investment and you can always sell it afterwards and recoup some money. I was a bit Hmm about them but we were given one as a present and it has been invaluable and is soooo comfy. I only wish we had room for the matching footstool as well!

Balletpink · 24/10/2010 20:33

Glider chairs you can get them in white with cream uphostery too and there are different models (some more expensive than others). Re the cleaning, ours hasn't got too grubby at all and have found that most marks spot-clean out quite easily.

We have an IKEA Poang, lovely for sitting feeding or rocking babies in. For night feeds tho I just brought them into bed with me and learnt to feed lying down...

Do your best to try before you buy. We got given a £200 Tutti Bambini glider chair and now have the hassle of sorting its removal (and replacement with a more expensive Dutalier version) as it's not fit for use! Angry

I have an old fashioned upholstered one from the 60s I guess. It is really comfy as it has 'wings'. Therefore great for snoozing while doing a night feed.

thelittlebluepills · 24/10/2010 20:57

I bought one off ebay for £92 - doesn't look as smart as the dutalier ones but it has been fab. One that reclines is essential if you have non-sleeping baby - I spent many of the small hours snoozing in mine - feet up on the footstool

our local mothercare has one in the mother and baby room and it seemed even more comfortable than my cheapie one.

even when baby is bigger they are useful as a comfy place to sit with/alongside your kids for bedtime stories

Mercedes519 · 24/10/2010 20:57

Agree with the glider chair recommendation but don't buy it from John Lewis as they are about twice the price of any where else. I think we got ours off EBay so it's definitely worth shopping around.

So comfy and with arms just the right height for feeding. Ours is still in use as a story chair for bedtime as well as starting again with the night feeds for DD.

Mercedes519 · 24/10/2010 20:59

X-post with littlebluepills...I think we agree!

I got a glider chair from Tutti Bambini (included in price of nursery furniture)...but so far, my DH, brother in law, neice and I have all trapped out fingers in the footstall (quite badly!!). My DH is now 3 weeks old and i haven't used it once. This is probably because it's in the nursery which is on a different floor to my bedroom...so i tend to BF in the lounge instead.

Not sure if i would buy one, but look around because some companies include them in packages.

Worth investing in something though, as i've developed a really bad back from BF on the sofa

Hope that helps...

I got my Duatalier secondhand from ebay - just did a local search which i saved off so that i got an email every time a new one came on.

It is SOOOOOO comfortable I love it. Having said that I've never really used the footstool as I couldn't work out how to get myself sat down whilst holding DD with the footstool in position, and obviously tricky to move it once you've sat down. I now use mine as a side table for my bottle of water and night light!

the other thing is as DD has got older it's been a major benefit having somewhere i can sit quietly to feed her, she is so easily distracted even with just DH around. So she gets a better feed in the nursery than in the living room.

moonminmama · 24/10/2010 21:15

i got a glider chair and footstool from kiddiecare. I got the cheapest one at the time, cushions come off. Paid less than £100 for the 2. I would thoroughly recommend them I am about to buy new cushions for dd who is due in Feb. DS is now 4 and he sneaks into the new nursery to sit in 'his' chair Smile

GingerCursedEeeee · 24/10/2010 21:17

Anna is your DH really only 3 wks old? Is that legal? Grin

DancingThroughLife · 24/10/2010 21:44

We have an Ikea one too, although I've only been using it for the last fortnight as 5mo DD has started waking in the night again.

The glider ones are lovely and comfy, but if your DC is a kicker/wiggler like mine, the arm at the foot end is just too tempting a game to play Grin Now, if they made one with detachable arms, they would be onto a total winner.
