I am in my 12th week and am in a pickle. i had decided that i wasn't going to buy a moses basket and jus put the baby in a cotbed but i have been told that i have to have a moses basket. Any advice this is my first child and have absolutely no idea what is essential and what isn't

I did have one but wouldn't bother again. Ds slept in for about 3 weeks. Just put the baby straight into a cot.

SecretNutellaFix · 23/10/2010 19:57

depends what you have space for in your room.

feedtheghoul · 23/10/2010 19:58

I guess it depends whether you have room for the cotbed in your room or not.

I didn't so would have struggled without one.

Having just sold the one I paid £120 for, still in pristine condition for £25, I don't think I'd bother to buy new though. Smile

Benefits of a moses basket is that they are fairly portable and DD slept in hers in the living room during the day and was supposed to sleep in it at night. Till she ended up in my bed and we decided co-sleeping would be more mutually beneficial Grin

Do you have room in your bedroom for a cot? Cotbeds are bigger still, and I later discovered unlikely to last till the 7 years that they say you will - DD was 2.5 when we move her onto a normal size bed.

misdee · 23/10/2010 20:00

i havent got one for my 5th.

i have a crib which i got for £10. but may not actually use, as just thinking of setting up the cot straight away this time.

websticks · 23/10/2010 20:01

I am not sure about this either. so will be interested to hear what people say.
I am 31 weeks so need to decide soon. I have been given a moses basket by someone but need to buy new mattress and a stand which would be roughly £50. Then sheets and blankets to fit. So wondering if i should go straight for a cot to cut costs.
Sorry i am rambling now and of no help to you
Hope someone comes along soon who can help us both lol

rubyslippers · 23/10/2010 20:02

Well I used mine a lot for both mine

Although DD spent a lot of time in bed with me - made breastfeeding much easier

choufleur · 23/10/2010 20:05

Oh good point ghoulysses. DS had a cotbed but I would just go for a cot now, we never used it as a bed and it cost qutea lot more than a standard cot.

I don't know anyone who has used a cotbed as a bed.

mamadiva · 23/10/2010 20:09

We had 2 moses baskkets for DS, one upstairs and one downstairs but that was only because they were passed onto us from my mum.

I don't know if I would buy one but at the same time it was great for that first while.

Pros- (IMHO)
Baby can be moved around with you
Takes up little space
Can be put in bed with you without fear for baby
Cosy little space for baby to sleep

Cons- (IMHO)
Will be outgrown quite quickly (ours lasted 4 months but my twin sisters lasted 9 months in them)
Can be expensive

Also not sure how advisable this is, but we used one as a baby nest and DS learnt to sit up in it when he was 5 months. We would put him in it and surround him with cushions and toys, he loved it and it meant he could'nt escape :o

rubyslippers · 23/10/2010 20:09

Ah -we did use our cotbed as a bed

Then put the bars back on for DD.

Already had 4 years use out of it with many more years to come

pozzled · 23/10/2010 20:12

I found mine really useful as it meant I could have her in whichever room I was in for daytime naps. Personally I wouldn't want to leave a newborn napping in a different room.
DD used hers for quite a long time though- about 3 months I think. Can see how it would be less useful if you happen to have a big baby.

We used cotbed from 6 months until age 4 so we paid £100 for it and done well.

I just gave it away to someone who needed a junior bed.

Lotofdamnationandhellfire · 23/10/2010 20:45

We borrowed a moses basket and ds wasn't happy in it so we bought a crib when he was approx 6 weeks old and he stayed in that until about 5 months old when we put him in his own room in a cot. Didn't have room for cot / cot bed in our room.

Dd then used it from birth - 6months. Well used, now in the loft for grandchildren etc.

mamadiva · 23/10/2010 21:03

Can I just add quickly for those who think that cotbeds are a lot more expensive, my friend has the Kiddicare Somerset cotbed £69.99 and says it's just as good as any.

clarabellarocks · 23/10/2010 21:14

I didn't have one for DD we just used the pram carrycot which detatched and took it up to the bedroom. Good job as she was almost 10lbs and by 4 weeks needed moving into her cotbed. They are quite expensive for the amount of time you need them for and a nightmare to store as they don't pack down. Borrowing one second time round though as do love them and think it's lovely for a baby to sleep in but I can hand it back when I'm done! (the moses basket - not the baby that is!)
