Buying baby clothes

31 weeks so starting to look into getting all the basics sorted. After reading lots of threads here I have decided I need to buy about 6 vests, 6 babygrows, a couple of cardis, and a few hats. Now my question is, will I need those in every size? That is, if I buy them all in newborn, will I then need them all again in 0-3 months and then 3-6 months? Or can I go straight from newborn to 3-6 months?

Thanks!

Newborn sizes vary (check with the store what weight they correspond to). So your baby may not ever fit into newborn sizes from some shops (e.g. if it's only for weight up to 8lbs and that's its birth weight). You'll definitely need more 0-3 sizes afaik.

I would also up that to at least 7 each of vests and babygrows....if not a few more. you'll be amazed how quickly you can get through them and the last thing you want is to have to keep running a wash......

I was thinking of ordering from mothercare. Their size guide says:
newborn up to 4.5kg/10lbs
0-3 months up to 6.5kg/14.5lbs
3-6 months up to 8kg/17.5lbs

I don't think I will have a super huge baby because of ethnicity, so think I will need newborn size for at least a few weeks, but then I was thinking that the 0-3 months and the 3-6 months don't sound SO different...and maybe I could economise by skipping 0-3 month size? Or should I go straight for 0-3 month size and skip newborn? Or do you think I will need all sizes and this is not the place to economise?

Its complicated by the fact that I live abroad and baby clothes are really expensive and not very good here, so want to get most shopping done before we leave UK when baby is only a few weeks old.

Ebay bundles are good. Logically, newborn clothes tend not to be worn that long so they are usually in good nick when second hand and you can always keep the newset nicest ones you buy from shops for best/for photos, whilst having a drawerful of soft, pre-worn ones for LO to be sick on/wee on/poo on etc. that way you won;t have to be endlessly washing quite so much.

I would say, if you're looking to economise, don't skip out a size, buy somewhere cheaper like Asda, Tesco etc. Mothercare is quite expensive imo.

I read someone on one thread saying that new babies hate having clothes put over their heads, and it is much better to buy vests that do up at the front. Mothercare is the only place I can find that type. Is it important do you think? Or ok just to go for the standard envelope neck vests which are available everywhere?

tesco do them in their boutique range. I've never used them personally, I'd say it's dressing as a whole they're not keen on, vests are over the head in a second, but it's up to you obviously [hsmile]

Envelope necks are fine IMO you will be careful putting it over baby's head not yanking or forcing it. I personally agree with getting adequate supplies for each age range but buy cheaper brand if cost is concerning you. My DS was 4.5kgs at birth but I still liked to have him in newborn to start with rather than flopping around in too big clothes. Maybe I'm in the minority but I was happy to have Primark or Tesco brand vests so I had plenty and didn't have to wash every day.

I've just got some lovely newborn babygros in Sainsburys, cheaper than mothercare, but lovely quality, had some for DTD's too. Lasted and washed really well. I have got everything in newborn size, due date is 19th December, so hoping to get next size up in the sales...thats my theory anyway!!

Thanks everyone for the advice. Will check out asda, tesco and sainsburys for newborn stuff then maybe wait for sales for the 0-3 month and 3-6 month things.
