I'm nearly 10 weeks pregnant and had bloods taken at first antenatal appointment last Friday. This morning I received a letter from my doctors saying they'd got my results back and I'm to make an appointment for more bloods in 2 weeks to "enable the doctor to compare results over a period of time and decide any changes that may need to be implemented"
Naturally, I'm worried to death...I'm sure if it was a disease or infection they'd have called me in sooner...the conclusion I have come to us that my hormone levels aren't what they should be and they are gonna see if they've dropped over 2 weeks, obviously indicating the baby has died.
Am I being silly? I can't stand going through this weekend not knowing as surgery not open till Monday...is there anything I can do this weekend, or anybody I can talk to for reassurance?? I'm so scared.

NHS direct? Or your local maternity unit? Or EPU?

Could it not be something as straight forward as them wanting to monitor your iron levels because you might be getting a little bit aneamic?

scarysnufflebeast · 22/10/2010 20:55

I don't think they measure your hormones at the booking in appointment bloods, I know none of these things are universal but the first blood test is normally iron (which they would monitor if it was low but not sure if 2 week intervals would be necessary), white blood cells (which could be high if you've recently had a cold or any sort of illness), red blood cells (not really sure what might go on with these).

The main thing I always hold on to is that if there is anything major they would contact you immediately by phone. No way would they just write a letter if they suspected anything terrible.

Great minds LF!

linziluv · 22/10/2010 21:12

Thank u so much. I always thought I was a rational thinker but clearly not!
I don't really have a clue what they test for...I just assumed they'd check hormone levels.
Anaemia would make sense...have been overly tired and pale lately.
I can't believe how much more positive I feel. I think I'll last till Monday and phone docs, feel stupid bothering EPU...thanks again x

Hormone levels are not routine at booking in.

Don't worry. It is probably your iron levels like others have been saying Smile

Congratulations Smile

I used to work for the nhs and know their letters are notoriously badly worded, often causing unnecessary worry. I also know they never send letters like that if there's actually anything wrong.

If I were you I'd ring them on Monday just to find out what's going on. But really no need to worry.

PipIsOutNow · 23/10/2010 10:47

i was aneamic during pregnancy and this exactly what they did with me, monitored my blood every 2 weeks just to check my iron/HB levels. i was such a worrier in pregnancy too, but ur bloods are no doubt iron related :)

pinkyp · 23/10/2010 12:24

I had something very similar to this! had bloods taken and i got a letter from drs saying i needed to have them repeated in 4 weeks - i rang up and asked why and they said my levels were slightly 'out'. I thought WTF? rang my midwife and she explained that i wouldnt need to have them repeated after all! She said when the blood tests come back they get put on the computer and if your levels are below a certain level you get 'flagged' to have repeat blood tests BUT they dont take into account pregnancy! Your iron levels etc are lower in pregnancy as your baby is using them too so i was flagging up on the drs computer but actually i was perfectly normal for a pregnant lady!

linziluv · 23/10/2010 14:15

I feel rather silly for over reacting so much! Still gonna ring on Monday and shout at them for scaring me! Lol...I'm convinced it's my iron levels they're talking about.
You defo worry more with 2nd baby...I'm guessin it's cuz you know exactly what you're losing when you already have one.
Thanks again everyone...dunno what I'd have done if I didn't have this forum!

Could also be the white blood cell count as this is often raised in pregnancy with no issues.

lucielooo · 23/10/2010 19:25

Unbelievable that they don't explain more fully! Who wouldn't panic getting a letter saying 'something may be wrong' but without further elaboration! Don't blame you for panicking OP, but pleased to hear that it's likely to be nothing :)
