Is it wrong to have nhs physio appt - someone else might need it more!

When I had really bad backache the other week I rang midwife and she referred me to physio. The backache is mid back and happens if I am at my desk and after a bit means I have to stop working for the day. It is okay in bed and disappears by morning. But as I am still using my desk a lot (have adjusted chairs and monitor height etc) it comes back most days. I've now got a physio appt - would it be wrong to use it when other people may need it more - I mean I know how to to avoid the backache - just don't sit at my desk (though I need to for work).

God no. I've suffered occasional backache for years but since I got pregnant the back pain has become increasingly worse. Some days it is that bad that I can't even move. During pregnancy you will find some days your back kills and some days it's ok. If the physio thinks you can solve your problem just by readjusting your working style they'll tell you. Otherwise they may be able to help you with exercise that keep it under control.

Are you going for group physio? Where I am that is the norm before you get one on one physio appointments.

But if they think you need an appt then take it!

I don't mean to sound negative but its likley to get worse as your pg progresses so I would see the physio, they will probably have some excercises that you can do to ease the pain. Its interfering with your work so I think you do need to be seen. I have spd and have already had physio 3 times which has helped hugely (currently 30wks pg). Hope they can help you, I don't think you're wasting their time at all.

Thanks - in that case I will go along. It's not group physio, no. Appt is a month before I am due and I can always cancel it if no worse then.

No - great idea. They should be able to show you good practices for how to sit/excercises to do at your desk to limit the damage before it gets to the point of being bad (I hope). I've been seeing a physio as I had a slipped disc last year - was almost recovered as I got pg - I now get regular pain if I do certain things, but I currently can usually limit the pain by avoiding certain things. The physio said seeing her was just the right thing to do and I was clever to ask for an appointment early as I should hopefully prevent bad damage [hgrin] . She's got me doing balancing excercises on a birthing ball every day :)
