Muslin Squares - where to buy?

Hello ladies,

Am in full on prep mode and one of the things that seems to be on everyone's 'must haves' list is an endless supply of muslin's.

Just wondered if you had any recommendations about where to by reasonable quality for reasonable price. I'm surprised how much they are at first glance...

All my babies were quite pukey too so I never left the house without 3 or 4. And they then became DS's snuggle of choice until about 2.

Also, they're fab for putting across the head end of pram / basket so that in the night you don't have to change all the sheets - just whip off the sicky muslin and hey presto, clean sheets!

The ones that still look like new 18months on are from m&s! They have a slightly thicker hem so haven't lost their shape and are slightly thicker so they are more absorbent too. Don't think they were much more £ than Mothercare tbh.

Muslins are wonderful.
We used them for all sorts, and one became DS's "Ninu" favourite bed time thang as well. Much easier to wash than a teddy or bunny!!!!!

I would have thought any of the main retailers - Mothercare, John Lewis, etc etc would sell perfectly good ones. And if you have loads of them you can just use and wash. And they get better with being washed loads....

Haven't used them for years now, but all this talk is making me rather nostalgic, muslins were a major part of my life for several years!!!! [saddo emoticon]

Five for a fiver at Sainsburys today, either unbleached cotton or various shades of blue

We had then too and they were invaluable in the early, sicky days - now ds is 27 months I used them instead of kitchen towel and for quick face wipes etc - then just stick them in the washing machine. They dry very quickly.

if you join the sma baby club (free to join online)they send you a huge muslin cloth out free :-) I love freebies!

I've gone down the cheapie route and bought some patterned muslin cloth to make some this time (if you think they can be pricey in the UK, you wouldn't believe NZ!). But I've completely forgotten how small/big they are.

Would someone help me out and measure one for me and post the result. It would be really, really helpful.

THANK YOU!

Penguin I buy the John Lewis ones and they are 70cm by 70cm.

With my kids they became a comforter as they got older. We call them a 'raggy-do' Blush

I'm 38 weeks with DC4 and have a stash ready. I like them in the early days, in addition to all the other uses people have suggested, as a light cover-up when breastfeeding in public - good for draping over any exposed bits of flesh without upsetting the baby!

I use them for everything wiping sick, milk, breast-leaks at night, light cover on baby legs when sleeping, rolled up as a head support in the carseat, blowing my nose in an emergency, lining cold change areas when we are out, folded over in the cot at head height to save the sheet, bib, general catch-all for any time we need a wipe, cloth, comforter, clothes protector, etc...

I have about 15 and at any one time half of them will be in use, dotted around the house/car or in the wash.

Asda do fabulous ones...i have the blue ones, pack of 3 for v little (1/50? 2 quid?) and they are dark blue, light blue and white with blue stars...they wash brilliantly and are nice and soft.

ASDA also do great plain white babygrows and vests and short sleeved babygros.

they also do cheaper cotton wool than anyone else ditto sudocream and metanium etc.

i would highly recommend for baby stuff.

also just a warning, lots of babies are allergic to the gel in pampers...i'd go for naturebaby (waitrose) or even huggies for preference.

I used to carry one and two clothes pegs to make an impromptu sunshade for the back of the Phil & Teds. My DCs weren't sicky but they did drool in their sleep, a muslin under their heads at night meant I didn't have to change the sheets every day.

PenguinNZ · 23/10/2010 11:08

Thank you Dinosaur! I too use them as a BF cover up if FIL around for example.

Great idea with the clothes pegs MrsVP.
