Had it confirmed that baby was in fact breech?

I have scan tomorrow to check. I am pretty convinced it is from symptoms but midwife admitted that she has 'no idea'. She said usually she can tell or give a percentage indication but with me she cannot tell at all!

I was! I went on to have an ECV (never again) which failed and then a section.

Good luck tomorrow

My midwife and consultant were pretty sure my second child was breech, he wasn't....must have been lying funny or something.

2 x midwifes were convinced my DD was engaged, it was DH that diagnosed her being breech.

I saw a different midwife at my next appointment and she was suspicious of a breech, a scan then confirmed she and DH were right!

I went for a scan a couple of weeks ago as my midwife was unsure of presentation 36 weeks, and DC was breech at 34 weeks. DC was cephalic and hopefully still is (39+4).

My midwife booked me in for an ECV when I didn't want one because she was convinced I was breech... I went along knowing I would refuse it, but thought at least I'd discuss with Dr and get booked in for an elective. When I arrived my bump was palpated by a student midwife, midwife and a Consultant all of whom concurred... My DS was breech. The Consultant said 'I will manipulate the baby into a more suitable position' and when I told her I didn't want an ECV she tried to talk me into it... It was me who suggested a scan to be sure. Sure enough when they scanned he wasn't breech at all... They are looked very suprised and said my baby had a very boney bottom!

Shock guacamole that's shocking practice - an ECV without a scan? Good job you said no!

Fredfred · 21/10/2010 09:31

I went for a scan wen I was pg with my DD and she wasn't breech.

Guacamole · 21/10/2010 09:37

It was odd, the Consultant said she frequently did ECVs and they weren't always able to move the baby... And sometimes when they were successful, the baby flips again into their preferred position. Maybe they would have scanned the moment they started the ECV I don't know, because I wouldn't let them start it.

I knew my baby was breech right from when I could feel well enough - about 26 weeks. It was a very obvious head under my ribs! I had the scan at 34+5 which confirmed him sitting up with extended legs, and went on to have a successful ECV at 37 weeks.

He was born normally at 40+9 Smile

As soon as my CMW started palpating (28 weeks) they had DD1 down as breech. I had a scan at 36 weeks which confirmed it. Declined an ECV and a CS, and she arrived at 41+3 weighing in at 9lb 12 as a planned home breech birth with IMs. :)

northlondonchoclover · 21/10/2010 15:53

Does an ECV hurt? Also I had the impression they used a scan as a guide? Surely the doctor doesn't just manipulate the baby without a scan???

OooeeeoooeeeoooeeEthel · 21/10/2010 16:31

Yes, though nothing like what people imagine.
Yes, they scanned me before, during and after, with a continuous heart monitor before and after.
No, that would be stupid and dangerous.

Definitely worth it though. (for me at least, the next person along will probably give you a different point of view.)

I would choose ECV again if necessary.

HeadFairy · 21/10/2010 16:35

Yep, midwives didn't believe me when I said he was breech but were happy to refer me for a scan to check. And there he was with his head under my ribs feet sticking out the bottom - he was footling. I'm fairly sure he'd been there from 30 weeks. Tried ECV but cancelled it because of severe chest infection, went on to have planned section.

AmeliaEarhart · 21/10/2010 20:23

My midwife was convinced that my baby was transverse at 36 weeks (I posted a thread about it last week)and sent me for a scan. He (baby) was cephalic all along.

I was a bit concerned that the midwife had managed to confuse the baby's bottom for his head, but the sonographer told me it was fairly common.

Tootlesmummy · 21/10/2010 20:27

I knew my DS was breech/transverse from around 32 weeks as I had constantly sore ribs from where his head was pressing on my ribs!
Scan at 34 weeks confirmed it. Tried ECV at 35 weeks (more painful than a Csect!), failed and had section at 39weeks.

LauraNorder · 21/10/2010 20:29

Yes an ECV bloody hurts and I would refuse one next time - not that there is any chance of there being a next time!
