What is likely to happen? They have her in maternity on steroids, but I don't want to be telling her all will be fine if it won't, but at the same time don't want to appear overly worried if all could be fine.

The poor thing, it is her first and she has been so desperately excited all pregnancy Sad

My waters broke at 33+4. When I went in, they gave me steroids (think these are to help mature the lungs?) They told me loads of people's waters break early, and still carry to full term (just with some "dribbling"!), but if I was going to give birth it would be in the next 24hrs, and, sure enough contractions started 22hrs later!

DD was born at 33+5 (5lb 2oz). She had to stay in SCBU until she was able to suckle (37wks). She is now 2yo and perfectly ok in every way Grin

Your friend is in the right place, in the right hands. I would tell her to try to sleep while she can (just in case!)

Friend of mine had her DD at around 30 weeks nearly 3 years ago. She was tiny, but about 3lb so not as very tiny as some you hear about. She was in NICU for several weeks, but has come on amazingly well since, and although she is still small and quite chesty (although no other lingering health problems) she is a sweet and feisty toddler!

I really hope everything works out for her, it must be such a worrying time Sad.

I believe the odds of survival for a baby born at 28 weeks are 90% - and every day counts so for 30 weeks it must be higher than that. It's a very worrying time, but I'm sure everything will turn out just fine.

My dsis waters broke at 30 weeks and she went on to have a 3lb 10oz dd 27 hours later after steroid injections. She cam home just over 4 weeks later and turned one today. :)

She's on the small side but perfectly healthy. I hope your friend and her baby are ok.

This has made me feel better (although still feel rather guilty for having a normal pregnancy!) about being jolly with her. She is a fairly chipper lady in general, so has been putting a brave face on, but they were due to move home (this is not her native country) next week, so that isn't going to happen for a while, which is giving her added stress. Poor thing!

Fingers crossed and hope all goes well for your friend and baby.
