Antenatal appointments, am confused

I'm a first-timer and am 16+2.

I had a booking in appointment, a scan at 12 weeks, and have now been told by my antenatal clinic that I won't see my mw again until I'm around 25 weeks. Is that right?

I'm having a risk assessment with a consultant tomorrow as I'm a high-risk, but I thought I was meant to have a mw check wt 16 weeks?

Am so confused.

It can vary from area to area, but your schedule looks like the one for second and subsequent pregnancies here in the Lothians. I got booking in, scan at 12 ish weeks, mw at 16 weeks, scan at 20 ish weeks, mw at 22 weeks and that's as far as I've got booked!

My 16 week mw check just involved her asking me if I was ok, if I had any swelling and listening to the heartbeat. Took about 5 mins. But if you have any concerns not addressed by the consultant you could maybe ring the mw and ask to see her? That seems an awfully long time to go without seeing your mw for your first pregnancy.

Can you find the antenatal services website for your local health authority and see what that says about frequency of appointments?

It sounds like my old area in that if you see the hospital between your scan and next mw appointment you don't see the midwife if that makes sense.
In my old are if you had your scan at 12 weeks you would see the midwife at 16 weeks and then not again until 20 something weeks like you are. I seen the hospital at 16 weeks instead so as a HCP had seen me in relation to baby then I never seen the midwife as she would just be going over things that had been checked at the hospital/consultant appointment.

A lot of areas don't even do the 1st baby schedule then a 2nd and susequent baby schedule they are so busy they ry and keep appointments to the bare minimum that they can.

It might be that because your seeing the consultant you don't see MW. I had one at 16 weeks and 22 then every 3 weeks after that, will be every 2 weeks near EDD, but some of those appointments were with MW some with GP, either way it was the same routine; test pee, ask how you feel, measure bump, listen to heart, make some notes, see you next time.

I don't think they bother with 16 if its your 2nd/3rd etc but everywhere is different. Ask the consultant if your worried.

That would also explain the reason for no appointment until 25 weeks as you will have a scan between 16 weeks and then thus being seen again by an HCP so no need for a midwife appointment AND a scan when they will be checking you and baby over anyway.

It all makes sense now, thanks ladies!

Had the appointment this morning and the doctor did the Doppler and the basic checks. Scan at 20 weeks, then mw at 25 weeks.

Exactly what you said in that the doctor did what the mw would have.

the consultant appt is in place of the mw appt you don't need both as same things will be done as mw would do.
