Crazy cycles and due date

Hi ladies,

Sorry to keep asking so many questions. I got my BFP last Thursday and I'm waiting until this Thursday to go to the doctor (mixture of reluctance to go if I'm going to have another cp/early mc, and not being able to get any time off work until then).

I wanted to ask any ladies with PCOS or very long cycles what happened when they went for their dating scans. When I got pregnant last cycle I knew that I had ovulated around CD 35 and got my BFP on CD47. The doctor said she didn't care that it was a 7-week cycle and wasn't going to go on 'when you think you may have ovulated' but on my LMP. So I'm guessing she'll say the same again.

But this time I ovulated somewhere between CD48 and CD50 and got my BFP on CD59. So I was heading for a 9-week cycle.

What I'm worried about is being made to go for a 12 week scan when in fact I might only be 7 weeks pregnant. I'm worried they'll think something's wrong because things will be so far behind where they're expecting. What did other people with long cycles do? Do they simply adjust the dates? Did you persuade your doctor to let you wait for the scan?

Thanks!

My friend was in this situation. She went for her '12 week' scan, they realised she was only 8 weeks, then she had another later when she really was 12 weeks. There was no worry about problems with the baby.

I lied.

Told them my period started 4 weeks before my bfp so that our dates tallied.

Oh that's good to know. I find it annoying they won't listen to when you are pretty certain you must have conceived. My BFP was so faint last Thursday that my husband said it wasn't there, and you could only see it under the lamp in the living room and not in broad daylight Grin But by Saturday it was thick and pink. So it's obvious I'm only around 4 weeks.

But at least it doesn't create any major problems. Just been googling and people with long cycles seem to be able to ask for ultrasound scans early on ... I might try that.

Hey show, I wish I could lie. But I went to the doctor about my long cycles about three weeks ago and he said I could have blood tests etc. I had to give him all the dates. God damn it!

They will adjust the date when you get the scan. And you have PSOS so irregular cycles are normal for you (but occasional irregular cycles are normal for everyone....) They may suggest a further scan a week or two after the first one, and provided the embryo has grown by the appropriate amount, they will be happy with that, and they will take the due date of the scans, not your LMP.

Your Gp sounds like an arse,or maybe she was having a bad day...

I'm not actually sure if I have PCOS. I think I may do but I hadn't started the process of diagnosis etc at the time. If she doesn't believe me about ovulation, she's not going to believe me about that either!

But as you might already be able to tell it's a surgery that has different GPs and you're not assigned to one. I can try to avoid her and go to one of the others.

Thanks for giving me more info. Information is good!

I have PCOS and have long/irregular cycles. I think if you tell the scan tech this then they will not be concerned if they see a smaller foetus than expected on BFP date.

I managed to get an early scan at 9 weeks by laying it on thick about being worried about having no symptoms. The sonographer just measured the baby on screen and said "that looks like a 9-weeker to me" and didn't seem too concerned about dates. When I had my 12-week scan she thought the same EDD date (from which I infer that the baby grew at the exact average rate between the two scans), so I feel fairly confident about the date.

That being said, that actually puts me unaccountably early. I keep a note in my diary of when I have periods, and for the last 6 months or so they've been spaced at 7-8 weeks. I therefore expected this one to be similar, but in fact the scan date puts me at a conception date which would have been more like a 5-week cycle. So what do I know, eh?!

Ha ha ecuse that's funny. Congrats on your pregnancy [hsmile]. I will make sure to tell the people at the scan (again - if I get that far, fingers and toes all crossed :))

Congrats takethat chuffed for you!

Just to add to the debate I was in a similar situation when I fell pg, GP insisted I was 6 weeks but when I went for scan I was 2 weeks behind, which I totally expected.

Good luck - hope you manage to convince them you're right!

Thanks mrswajs and congrats to you too! Long time no see!
