Managing weight during pregnancy??

There is a new book out that helps women lose and manage their weight DURING pregnancy. I'd like to know...do you care about putting on weight when pregnant and do people want to lose weight when pregnant?

Here's the link for that book:

Yes i want to lose weight but only cause i'm obese, lost some beforehand but not enough for a nice healthy pregnancy, and probably not enough for me to be able to give birth where i want to. thanks for the link

I haven't cared too much, but did want to avoid putting on excess weight as I was losing weight before getting pregnant, plus didn't want the extra health risks!

As it turns out, my metabolism has gone up and I've lost weight away from my bump & boobs without having to do much other than eat reasonably healthily most of the time and stay moderately active. It is nice, I have to say, even though I didn't plan/work to do it.

NICE have issued guidance on managing weight gain in pregnancy as women putting on too much and increasing their risk of GD, etc has become a real issue in this country. So I don't think advice on what to do is out of order as long as the emphasis is on health first, not weight loss over nutrition or despite what your BMI was pre-pregnancy (e.g. if you were a size 8 pre-pregnancy you may need to put more on to be healthy in pregnancy & for breastfeeding).

If I was overweight to begin with then I would care as it can lead to complications. My BMI was 23 before I got pregnant and I usually gain about 4-5 stone which is a lot, perhaps too much, but I lose it all within about 6 mths due to breastfeeding, walking lots and slimming world so it doesn't really bother me.

It's slimming world that i'm on so i personally don't see it as a diet but as a healthy eating plan with support. :)

cep, do you mind me asking why you might not be able to give birth where you want to?

Thank you for your comments everyone

Because i want to go the midwife lead centre and it's based on bmi not on how the pregnancy went or how healthy i am . Last time they told me about 2-3 weeks before my edd that i might not be able to go there because of my bmi even though i'd had no problems during the pregnancy whatsoever didn't even have ms. I was furious because i'd said all along that's where i wanted to go. in the end i went anyway and she asked me if i wanted to stay and give birth there as it was quiet. i thought what a stupid question if i didn't i wouldn't have gone there. (sorry old feelings coming back.)

Anyway i had a really good experience there and got loads of support and would love to go back but i'm a stone heavier and don't think they'll let me. Hence why want to lose weight and also am hoping they'll monitor my weight throughout before making a decision but i doubt it.

Sorry for the length of reply feel abit strong about it Grin

I don't think pregnancy one would naturally want to lose weight... To me, it is unimaginable to lose weight without extensive and streneous cardio excercise which is off limits during pregnancy...

My pre-pregnancy BMI was 16 and I have always been quite fit, however, I put on weight quickly if I do not watch what I eat and reduce physical activity. I read about numerous complications associated with putting on too much weight during pregnancy (including diabetes, high blood pressure, venous trombosis, ect) and difficulty of recovery after delivery... What I hope to do is carefully control my weight throughout pregnancy and make sure that I do not put any excessive amount. I have been keeping a food diary and trying to not eat more than 200-300 calories more than pre-pregnancy as well as making sure I stick to a healthy and balanced diet plan.

I lost weight in the run up to my wedding 4 stone, and kept it off though didn't loose anything significant before becoming pregnant.

My BMI is high, 38 and puts me at a high risk factor and was told no MLU for me. I was referred to the dietician and when she saw my meal plans for the week she was impressed wiht how sensible I eat. The biggest thing with this pregnancy is that I lost the taste for chocolate, I could be eating a wax candle and not know the difference. I've lost nearly a stone now that I'm 32 weeks and my BMI has dropped accordingly. But I didn't set out to loose that weight while expecting, I've continued to eat normally and think with the increased metabolism that's shifted some hidden pounds. MW's were a little worried about my weight loss and check my levels often, but everything is well with LO and me. It's my first as well.

My ideal BMI is half the weight I am now, which is a little scary. I do plan on loosing weight after having the baby, I'm certainly aiming to be much more active [who wouldn't be with a LO!].

Is this going to be an article somewhere?

cep · 18/10/2010 16:14

i think if you're already slim, you wouldn't need to lose weight and if you did want to it would need to be strenuous exercise. Sometimes however if your not stick thin, a healthy eating diet such as slimming world can help you lose weight/maintain with out having to attend the gym everyday.

LadyBaiter · 18/10/2010 16:21

I don't know about managing my weight during pregnancy, just about managing to keep some food down, so I guess I'll just move along Grin

hairytriangle · 18/10/2010 17:53

I have started out in the overweight category (by half a pound!) and am unhappy about that. So if during the pregnancy I could lose some of the excess weight, without compromising my health or the babies, that would be great.

DuelingFanjo · 18/10/2010 19:02

I was well over a stone over my 'normal' weight when I got pregnant but haven't ever considered losing any weight during the pregnancy. I eat the same as I used to eat, sometimes well and sometimes not so well. I figure I have plenty of time to lose weight after the baby is born if I really want to.

If this is for an article I don;t want to be involved. Grin

I was 11st when I found out I was pregnant 4 weeks ago, I'm close to 11st5 at the moment which I'm pretty unhappy about, but at the moment snacking is the only thing helping with the nausea that has crept up on me. I really don't want to get huge (as I do think I could have a tendancy to do) but obviously I want to try and eat healthily too. Very tricky and difficult I think.
