I'm nearly 35 weeks, suffering badly from reflux during the night.
It happens some nights but not others, but I can't see any obvious link, so I am assuming it is possibly to do with the way the baby is lying too. I take a Raniditine tablet an hour before bed, and a large swig of Gaviscon Advance when I go to bed.
The past two nights have been hellish. Both nights I woke up less than one hour after falling asleep, with my throat on fire. I had to have Gaviscon around 5 more times during the night. Last night I tried propping myself up a bit, but ended up with a sore back very quickly.
Any tips? Im working tomorrow so I need a restful night or I've no chance of getting through my shift

i was actually crying my eyes out last night as the pain of the heartburn was unreal!!!Sad

Ever the drama queen!! god help my mum whos going to be my birthing partner!! haha! Grin

i asked my midwife and i got given gaviscon advance liquid which was awful!! didnt work one little bit, i actually took it back to the chemist and said you have a problem with your gaviscon, because i was so annoyed i was still in pain! haha! Grin

i got some gaviscon double action chewable tablets which worked for a few days but now they seem to have stopped!

Its actual hell!

Go to a GP rather than your midwife and get prescribed omepazole - it's not really worth suffering if you don't have to.

Sympathies OP. A non-drug suggestion which helped me was seeing a chiropracter who specialises in pregnancy/babies, I was lucky enough to see my best friend who did it for free, but she does something to the top of the stomach (sort of moves it over) by pressing on the skin, and it worked a treat in preventing the acid coming up, and really took the edge off my discomfort.

Might be worth it for those who have longer to go, one treatment should last a few weeks, try to find a recommended chiropracter though.

Yes lychee - that can be good. My chiro taught me to do it to myself actually. Doesn't work completely, but can help.

Expecting: I suffered from "heartburn" long before I got pregnant due to a hiatus hernia. I understand your pain. The first time I got it, I thought I was having a heart attack. The pain is so intense and goes through your whole body. Definitely try to get omeprazole.

thanks for the advice, i will try to get some omeprazole! thank you!

Julezboo · 21/10/2010 22:49

I was also prescribed omeprazole and i agree its magic!

Tried drinking a glass of milk? Worked for me, for a little while at least.

vmcd28 · 22/10/2010 17:51

bobby, yes, i'm drinking many glasses of milk a day!
I have to say, I'm the original op, and trying not to eat anything or drink fizzy drinks after, say, 8pm is making a big difference. It means I'm sleeping better, which actually helps with the reflux too.
