hiya, probably a bit late to worry about this since i have already used the damn thing but anyway does anyone know if its ok to dye hair with those at home box kit thingies?

havent been able to get to hairdressers for awhile and prices have gone up. so decided to do the loreal nutrisse one. only thought about it once i'd done it though eek.

is it likely i've caused any damage? eeek am panicking a bit as i know cant really do anything now. am 16 weeks btw.

so has anyone else done this and is it ok?

thanks for any replies

I'm pretty sure it's ok - I checked last time I was pregnant and was told it would be fine. I dyed mine at about 13-14 weeks this pregnancy and will be needing to do it again soon as the greys are coming through!
I was worried about everything last time but am a little more relaxed this time.

discobeaver · 17/10/2010 19:24

Think you will be fine. I was wondering myself, tbh, then I thought, well, all the celebrity mums and pregnant wags out there I am sure don't go 9 months without colour, and they are fine.
So using that fantastic logic, I think it's okay.

bessie26 · 17/10/2010 20:16

why not phone the number on the box & ask the manufacturers?

ayjayjay · 17/10/2010 20:26

Absolutely fine. General advice is to wait until after 12 weeks just to be on the safe side but this is erring on the side of caution rather than any real danger.

I died mine every 4 weeks from 13 weeks onwards. DD now 3 months.

See NHS advice here

As my very sensible midwife said to me, if something is dangerous you will either be told by your GP/midwife and it is likely to be in a pamphlet somewhere! I've been dying my hair every 4 weeks for my whole life with no ill effects - can't imagine it would do anything to the bub.

lilly13 · 18/10/2010 08:53

my obstetritian who is very experienced told me definitely avoid dying my hair during the 1st trimester and then use a vegetable/herbal dye afterwards... not sure whether this will cover greys on my black hair, but will give it a try Confused... you will probably be fine, just try to use a more gentle product (non-permant and/or natural) going forward... good luck!

ayjayjay · 18/10/2010 15:12

lilly13 are you UK based? This is not ususally the advice given in the UK and I think your obstetrician, experienced though they may be, is being over cautious.

lilly13 · 18/10/2010 15:23

I am UK based, though I am not a Brit and am married to an American... I have a private obstetriatian who works in several hospitals in London, one of which is an NHS hospital. It is possible that he is being cautious... However, this is my first pregnancy and I am inclined to listen to the advice of qualified doctor, rather than a hairdresser, etc... I am only trying to be helpful here in sharing my exprience and, of course, it is ultimately one's personal choice...

I used hair dye during 2 pregnancies and regret it, now I can't use the stuff at all and am growing it out welcoming in the grey!

Have a look at the info about the chemicals on Going Grey Looking Great and you'll see it is best avoided during pregnancy whilst your body is more sensitive and the extra hair due to not shedding so much makes it harder to get your scalp clean. Veg dyes are just as bad, actually they are very strong.

I wouldn't worry about any harm done now, just relax and leave your hair to itself for the next few months. It'll fly by, good luck Smile

pipoca · 18/10/2010 15:30

yes it's fine, just about to do mine.

Diege · 18/10/2010 15:34

I do agree that your obstetrician may be being a little overly cautious lilly13, though I know you mean well. I'm sure he is very knowledgable, and will be aware of the most recent findings in Gb Journal of Obstetrics snd Gynae that conclude that the risk, to quute, is 'not established as a feasible risk to warrant changes to current advise to pregnant women'. THis conclusion is based on a review of hundreds of animal-based/anecdotal 'human subject' studies. They comment that much of the scare stories in the past related to hair colours that had chemicals in them that are now banned (1970s) There is indeed no real risk in the first trimester, let alone after that. Oh and I speak as a researcher in the field of risk and pregnancy who's had to plow through this stuff for a research project, not a hairdresser Wink.

ayjayjay · 18/10/2010 16:24

I do understand you're only trying to help lilly13 however I wasn't suggesting the the OP ask a hairdresser instead of a medical professional. If you look at my original post I was directing the OP to the advice given on the national NHS website.

ayjayjay · 18/10/2010 16:31

also should clarify I'm not trying to put you down lilly13. It's just that during my pregnancy I got myself in such a worry about all the posible dangers I ended up not enjoying it and I really regret that now. I'm just trying to help the OP avoid the same worry.
