Pregnacare Omega 3 are making me throw up !

Sorry for the lovely title.

I've had to stop taking them. I took pregnacare plus omega 3 all through my last pregnancy without a problem as such although the omega 3 marine oil capsules really repeated on me.
This time though i just can't keep them down at all. The folic acid is fine but everytime i take the oil capsule about an hour later i am really sick, i'm 32 weeks pregnant now and have well and truly given up with them.

Is it just me or has anyone else had a problem with taking the oil ?. Just wondered if it's just a problem i have with them or if anyone else has suffered similar ?

My husband keeps saying it's probably just psychological because i don't like fish ! But it's not like you can taste them and i really don't think thats the cause.

It isn't psychological. They sometimes made me gag too. I gave up after one week of having them. Them and the pregnacare. I could only manage the folic acid.

It isn't a problem. Doctors always suggest you try and get these vitamins from your diet first rather than prenatals anyway. As long as you have a balanced diet and are getting omega 3 elsewhere there's nothing to worry about. The only one my midwife has told me to take was the folic acid. Anything extra is a bonus.

PaigeTurner · 17/10/2010 16:53

I couldn't even take the folic acid - my body has completely rebelled against supplements the whole pregnancy (28 weeks). I've been being extra careful with my diet where I can.

I struggled with any of the pregnacare or other pregnancy multivitamins, if it wasn't nausea it was constipation or lethargy/tiredness and that was before I fell pregnant. I stopped taking them and went to the folic acid only, it was a smaller pill and didn't repeat on me. I only took them in the lead up and for the first trimester, and my levels have been fine so far and not needed to take anything else. This is my first and I'm 32 weeks today.

I found pregnacare made me horribly nauseous - I switched to Sainsbury's own brand which didn't taste as bad, and were smaller.

I have no idea whether it was psychological or not - it's completely possible that I began to associate them with morning sickness in early pregnancy - but if it's making you ill you don't really care WHY do, you?

Switching brands helped me so give it a try.

maybe try taking DHA and EPA in a liquid form? these are more expensive, but do not contain any additives and are much more gentler on one's stomach... I am taking these as liquid by NutraSea, cost gbp13.70(bought at the organic pharmacy on Fulham Rd in Chelsea) and also a pregnancy vitamin complex by Viridian, cost gbp13.50 (very high quality and contain essential amino acid which Pregnacare does not; bought these at the same place)... I took different vitamins before which made me feel a bit nauseous and had to stop...

lilly13 · 17/10/2010 18:04

Sorry I bought these supplements at the organic pharmacy at the organic foods store on Park Walk / Kings Rd (Chelsea)

Thanks everyone.

I'm really suprised that others have had the same issues. The few people i've mentioned it to before have just pulled a funny face at me like i'm a bit odd, so it's good to read and hear that other mums to be have found similar or the same, and it's not just me.
I know it's definately them that causes the sickness as i'm only ever sick after having one so have given up on them for good.

Thankyou for the alternative suggestions i'll look into them as my diet isn't brilliant. I'm so busy (have 5 children)making sure that the children eat fairly healthy decent meals that i often just grab toast or a sandwhich during the day and then eat anything that takes less than 20 minutes to make in the evenings because by then i can't be bothered, though i know i should be Blush

So i'll check out the alternative suggestions.

Thankyou Smile

i was quite sick when i took pregnacare, took asda own make pregnancy vitamins and was fine :)

Muser · 17/10/2010 22:02

Pregnacare is evil. I was horribly sick with them. Sent them to another newly pregnant friend to see if she'd do better. She didn't have much sickness, until she took the pregnacare.

Try and eat healthier instead. There are a lot of healthy meals you can make in 20 minutes. After all, it takes less than 5 minutes to cook broccoli.

alleykitten · 17/10/2010 23:57

I got nauseous and consitpated from taking pregnacare.
The people who make it should be shot - dreadful formulation of the cheapest ingredients that the body can't absorb.

Vitamins and minerals come in lots of different pharmacological forms, which vary massively in how easy they are for the body to absorb. Often the cheapest forms are the least easily metabolised, and they just irritate the digestive tract instead.

I found biocare, viridian and solgar preg multivits plus solgar omega oils are fine, no sickness or constipation. They're easy to find and buy online if you can't find them in your chemist.

gaelicsheep · 18/10/2010 00:02

I really don't think you need them do you? I gave up on taking any pregnancy vitamins in the early days of morning sickness.

Mahraih · 18/10/2010 13:11

I'm using Sanatogen vitamins and omega 3 - might be worth a try?

They seem to be fine, no nausea unless I take them on an empty stomach.

PJen · 18/10/2010 13:23

Yes they do that but there is a way around it!!

Have it in the middle of your lunch or biggest meal of the day with tons of water and eat most of your food afterwards. If I don't do that the capsul breaks and the aweful tast of rotten oil comes to my mouth with extreme nausea! But if I eat afterward plenty of meal, then it is covered...

NeedToSleepZZZ · 18/10/2010 13:50

I can't recommend floradix enough, it's a bit expensive but well worth it especially in the first trimester when you don't want to eat. You can find it in healthfood stores and it's really easy to digest and doesn't taste bad!

I'm now taking calcium/ magnesium/ vit D3 in one from Boots which is fine along with food.

theyoungvisiter · 18/10/2010 16:16

urgh floradix gave me the dry heaves. Tasted like tea made with seaweed and vegemite.

Still, each to his own!

radstar · 19/10/2010 20:22

The sanatogen pregnancy ones don't really agree with me. I think it must be the gel they are made of. Even before I was pregnant I took the boots weel woman ones and they made me feel so rough I chucked them, similarly my dh felt the same on the boots well man capsules so chucked his.

I've wasted such a fortune on vitamins this last six months and still have a box of the pregnancy ones to go - damn 3 for 2 offers just aren't worth it!!!! Grin

greatgoose · 19/10/2010 20:24

Flax oil swigged neat from the bottle is quite nice for Omega 3.
