What kind of weird infection...?

I'm 34 weeks pregnant and for a couple of months now I've had really funny discharge (I know I know months!) but I thought it was just pregnancy doing it, recently it's got really nasty and acidic, to the point of stinging poor DH in bed! I wasn't getting any other symptoms other than being incredibly sore and itchy and red and having to put savlon on my lady bits every day.... I thought it was normal... and I'm a second timer too!

The midwives have been crap at doing urine samples too, but last time I went (last week) I made sure I bought a little pot from the chemists and took it along, she found protein, sugar and bacteria in there.... since then I've started to feel really sick - I keep going madly hot and and then getting cold sweats and then shivery... and I have a nasty ache around my bladder all the time

The mw sent off my urine to the lab last Tuesday, and gave me an appointment for the Tuesday after next (not tomorrow, one after..) the thing is my GP is absolutely bloody impossible to get an appointment at (have ranted about this before!) was just wondering if you guys thought it was serious or whether I should just wait.... or even if I'm just getting flu and it's not connected!

Argh being pregnant is so worrying!

bloody hell... I think you should definitely ring and try to get the results today and an appointment tomorrow at the latest. doesn't seem like an acceptable level of care to me. I would really kick up in your sitation.
if you can't get any sense out of your mw then what about calling the hospital and getting their advice?

fastasleep · 12/09/2005 13:25

Thanks, I think I'm going to ring tomorrow, they supposedly do same day appointments for everyone... maybe if I kick up a stink I'll get seen!

fastasleep - you need to have a swab of the discharge taken. Could simply be thrush (which can be very irritating when longstanding) or could be trichomonas which needs an antibiotic.

A discharge contaminated urine specimen and usually shows protein.

It is probably something that can easily treated but I would get a GP ASAP just so you can get it treated for your own comfort. Midwife should be able to take a swab but sometimes GP is quicker.

Enid · 12/09/2005 13:31

is trich smelly?

fastasleep · 12/09/2005 13:43

Thanks Mears... I hadn't really noticed that it was smelly... but my discharge looks like mustard (the hot dog kind) ... the day my GP is quicker at doing anything will be the day I jump up and down with gleeee, I bet I won't be able to get an appointment... might just take myself along to the hospital for the ante natal clinic and sit and wait for a few hours... pah.

Just wish I didn't feel like I was dying of flu!

If it's trich... er... how did I get it? Was looking on the BBC info page about it, it says it's an STI... wouldn't that sort of implicate DH in some horrid affair? !

mears · 12/09/2005 13:47

No, no - it just means it can be transferred from one person to another..

fastasleep · 12/09/2005 13:50

Poor DH...

After a night of wriggling and writhing with the itchy burning soreness (but still no pain when urinating) I've been trying to call the doctors and suprise bloody surprise I've been sat here for half an hour (you're only allowed to call for a same day appointment and you're only allowed to call at exactly 8:30..) it's been consistently engaged/ringing out/engaged/ringing out and I've HAD IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Cries pathetically I'm just going to wait till next bloody Tuesday to see my midwife who can't prescribe me anything anyway.

do you have a NHS Walk-In centre anywhere near?

Can you call the midwives and get an earlier appointment? Insist on it

Kiwifruit · 13/09/2005 09:12

Keep ringing Fastasleep, and kick up a real stink when you get through - emphaisise that you're 34 weeks pregnant. That really is appalling service! If you don't have any luck and you don't have a drop in centre, maybe try calling NHS direct? Or does your hospital have an Antenatal Day Assessment Unit?

Twiglett · 13/09/2005 09:15

can you dial 5 on their engaged tone??

edodgy · 13/09/2005 09:17

fastasleep you're in liverpool aren't you? Go straight to the assessment unit in the delivery suite at the womens a consultant will take a look at you and swab you there.

harpsichordcarrier · 13/09/2005 09:21

absolutely, go to the delivery suite. I am 31 week's pregnant and that is what I would do. this is not an acceptable level of care that you are getting.

fastasleep · 13/09/2005 10:02

I'll feel like a fool turning up at the Women's! This is ridiculous though, can't call the midwives even though the clinic is on today because it's the same number.. their clinic finishes at 12 I wonder if I'll get through before then lol!

I feel all tearful and crap now, stupid hormones...must fight the urge to just curl up in bed!

OP posts:
edodgy · 13/09/2005 10:47

Honestly hun go to the Women's dont feel like a fool, i went there the other week cause i was feeling a bit moist and was concerned my waters were leaking and basically all was well and i'd just p*ed myself !!!! Cant be more embarrassing than that, they also swabbed me as i had some greeny discharge. Ring them first and they'll tell you to go in.

harpsichordcarrier · 13/09/2005 10:49

edodgy is RIGHT. the midwives will want to swab you, want to see what the infection is, want to check your urine and your bloods...
am seething on your behalf. It's my hormones I think

harpsichordcarrier · 14/09/2005 12:04

fastasleep, are you feeling any better today?

fastasleep · 14/09/2005 12:14

Hi I'm about the same as before, but I'm seeing a doctor tomorrow... I know I'm not being the most efficient at appointments but tomorrow is better than next Tuesday! Still no stinging when peeing which is good, it's just got toxic acidy gunk! Lovely!

Thanks for the concern, I'll be fine honest!

ei23mummy · 14/09/2005 12:39

hey fastasleep, you should defo go straight to the womens about your funny stingy bits!!(imin l'pool aswell) im 24 weeks pg and have had to hav a referral to a consultant due to the same sort of problem- i thought it was a waterworks thing so just kept going to my g.p- who was useless!! it turns out that the gp was giving me completely useless antibiotic treatment as the infection iv got is resistant to most antibiotics!!! aaaarrrrgh! so finally after several doses (and weeks off work!) its getting sorted! it sounds like yours may be a really bad case of thrush tho and that may be what your doc will say and give you some cream to put on yer bits! dont worry though the womens get people in all the time for alot less serious things and dont mind so they would prob welcome a challenge!! good luck at your appointment tomorrow!
