Nose bleed - WTF?

Hello. I am 11+5 and had a pretty serious nosebleed this arvo. Certainly heavier than I have ever had before and I am just curious about why.

I have no doubt it's just 'one of those things' like bleeding gums. But just wondered if anyone has also had them and know why you get them.

Was just a bit odd Hmm. And quite embarassing that I managed to splatter blood on my mahoosive (for me!) norks!

I had nosebleeds when I was pregnant with my twins...have you had your 12 week scan yet? Grin

LittleMilla · 14/10/2010 21:46

poorbuthappy - nope, it's on Monday. Beginning to get really excited, but also trying to prepare myself for worse case. But every time I look at my expanding tum I keep on thinking that all will be OK.

Had an early scan at 6 weeks and saw strong HB and was told everything looked good. So I am really hopeful, but we'll see!

it should just be an increase in blood circulating your system...but I didn't get it with dd1, but would regularly get them with the twins!

Best of luck!

Yep, I got them with ds and had one yesterday too (am only 7+1)

At 4 weeks, I had a nosebleed like you wouldn't even believe. It was literally running from my nose, and I had to keep spitting up blood. It continued on and off for 4 hrs, then I had to go to hospital and be admitted overnight. They packed it, and eventually it stopped. The next day, they decided to cauterise it, but when they put the camera up my nose, they couldn't find anything wrong, or where the bleeding was even coming from! They were completely baffled and put it down to pregnancy.

If it happens again, their advice was to tilt your head forwards, and hold your nose TIGHT at the nostrils for ten mins solid. Don't let go at all. After ten mins, check if it's stopped. If not, do it again, for another ten mins. Then, if it's still not close to stopping, phone the doc at that point

vmcd - that's really helpful advice, thank you very much.

So many ODD things happen to us when we're pg. Ha!

Nose bleeds are very common during pregnancy because the hormones soften and dilate your blood vessels so they are more likely to break in delicate areas such as your nose. You may also notice that your gums bleed more during pregnancy as they become spongier and more sensitive to any plaque left lying around. Flossing and thorough brushing is very important during pregnancy, especially if you notice bleeding which means that they are being irritated by plaque bacteria and this can lead to gingivitis so keep on top of dental health!

I haven't had any actual nosebleeds, but I am so stuffed up all the time, and most of the time when I blow my nose, its full of blood. Gross.

I never had nose bleeds until I was pregnant. They started for me because I had low iron, but apparently they can happen just because your veins go funny, meh. I had to start carrying tissue with me everywhere after I started randomly dripping blood from my nose like water when I was out :(

They have pretty much stopped now, I think it was around 26 weeks when it started to settle down for me. When I talked to the GP and Midwife about them, they did say you can have a procedure done to have them stopped if they keep happening, but I wasnt told what that is, only that it's not very fun, I opted for more tissue. But, perhaps if it bothers you you can bring it up at your next visit, see if they can stop it for you?

naghoul · 17/10/2010 10:39

I get them now, but never before being pg.

Also, once i started on the iron tablets it happened a lot less. Have no idea why this would be the case though.
