progesterone cream

I have been using progesterone cream (a pea sized amount twice a day) since just before 6 weeks during this pregnancy, on the advice of my accupuncturist. I had 2 very early MCs before this (one successful pregnancy before that) and some issues with conceiving, and the 2 months before I got pregnant I'd had my luteal phase progesterone tested by my GP, and it was pretty low (never higher than 20, test repeated at various points in LP).

I'm now 11+5, and the accupuncturist has advised stopping using the progesterone cream (slowly - using it only once a day for a week before stopping altogether). I'm really nervous about stopping. Has anyone else used progesterone cream / progesterone supplementation? Did you stop at 12 weeks? I've read online that there's no issue with continuing to use it, and I'm tempted to just keep on with it, although the accupuncturist seemed convinced that I should stop now.

Hi Grumpyfish!

I used progesterone pessaries following a sucsessful IVF frozen embryo transplant in March, and it was also only until 12 weeks.

I was nervous too, I seem to recall being told that the placenta should take over by weeks 8 to 10 weeks, so no need for you to continue with the extra as it should be very well established by then.

Hope that helps a little to put your mind at rest.

Hi GrumpyFish, I have been using Progestogel for my breasts(not licensed in the UK, but very commonly used in the USA, France, Germany and Russia). My obstetritian said there is absolutely no harm in using it if this helps reduce pain - I have an awful fibromatosis -(as long one is using a pure progesterone gel without additives)... I think many doctors here shatter progesterone products because many of them are not licensed / were not clinically trialled on in the UK, but that's a separate matter... Hope this helps.

PS the reason why your doctor recommended to stop was probably to the fact that your body naturally starts producing a lot more progesterone to support pregnancy...
