Hi. I'm 37+2 and have just bought some clary sage oil as I've heard it can bring on labour. Anyone know when you can start using it? Also, how do you use it? I heard you can rub it on your bump but in a carrier oil... I couldn't find a neutral carrier only a sweet almond one which Im not sure is safe to use. Can I use it in the bath, put it in an oil burner or best to use it just in labour? Also, anyone used it and thought it worked or is it nonsense? Any advise please ladies x

At my antenatal group we sat around an oil burner sniffing it when we were overdue and fed up! Nothing happened. And it doesn't smell very nice. Good fun though!

i used it in the bath-6 drops. smells yuk though! why can you not use the sweet almond oil as a base for massage?

:)

nicm you probably can use it.... I'm just pretty clueless about what oils you can use and which ones are a no no. I know they say that you absolutely shouldn't use some of them and didn't know if the sweet almond in the carrier was one of the forbidden ones! Maybe I will just use it in the bath as you did. Did it work? Or are you still waiting for it to work it's magic?

used this when i was 40+5 and put few drops in bath, went into labour 24 hours later. Recommended it to 3 of my friends, and they all went into labour within 24hrs, in fact they delivered within 48 hrs, i on the other hand had a lazy boy who wouldn't budge, but i don't think i can blame it on the clary sage!!!I wouldn't use it before my EDD though!

Sweet almond oil is perfectly safe. In fact, it's clary sage that isn't (because it brings on contractions, which seems to be why you want to use it).

I used Clary sage from about 37.6 weeks, rubbed into bump in quite copious quantities, mixed with neutral body lotion such as E45. went into labour at exactly 38 weeks which was a blessing as she was already 8lb12 so would have been rather larger had I gone to term. I really think it helped bring on labour and I'd use it again.

Thanks for replies. Think will leave using it til my EDD but definately seems worth giving it a try.

I wouldn't recommend to use before 38 weeks.

I used when I was 40+6, put 4 or 5 drops into bath, then mixed with olive oil (maybe 2 drops) and rubbed into belly, went to bed with lid open on bedside table and was in labour a couple of hours after going to bed!

Will be using it again in a few weeks (I'm 35 weeks).

Good luck

I would leave it until 38/39 weeks too.
Just in case it does work and your baby comes early!

I sniffed a lot of lavender during last labour...think the breathing deeply helped the most.
