8 wks pregnant, gastroenteritis and vomiting getting worse not better

I feel like I would rather be dead, honestly. I am 6 days into a bout of gastroenteritis (diarhoea, vomiting, aching, heartburn, stomach cramps). I know it is gastroenteritis as the rest of the family has had it too. Thing is, 6 days on and the puking's getting worse not better. I'm worried it's tipped me over into HG, which I had in my first pg.
For example, I puked twice in the night and have now puked twice this morning, more than yesterday.
I have a doctor's appointment today and am thinking of asking him for anti emetics as I cannot go on like this, I want to die. I can't look after my toddler, I can work, I haven't eaten for 3 days cos I can't face it and it just comes right back up.
What anti emetics work? I've heard of cyclizine but it doesn't seem to exist here in Spain. Buccastem? Stemetil?
Please help me.

If you have GE then anti-emetics are not suitable IME as you need to get rid of the bacteria that are causing the problem.

However, I would def go and get yourself checked. Even if it is (only!) GE it might be worth having yourself checked for dehydration as you will be particularly susceptible to it when pg.

And if it's HG then you'll want that looked at asap too I would assume?

I hope you feel better soon. x

from what i've read, it's almost certainly viral not bacterial. also i think i've tipped over into hg now.

You could be dehydrated which in turn causes more sickness. Sounds like you need IV fluids. I take metaclopramide. Do they have that there?

buttonmoon78 · 13/10/2010 10:13

Oh you poor love. Still, you need to get rid of whichever 'bugs' are causing it - viral or antibacterial. I almost never ever use immodium etc for this reason. It's def better out then it Grin

I managed 3 pgs without a whiff of sickness, but many of my friends have had it and I've felt so bad for them all.

I hope you don't suffer for long.

Oh, and stemetil is my anti-emetic of choice when on antibiotics etc...

pipoca · 13/10/2010 10:23

I've just spoken to a midwife friend her and she's said to ask for metaclopramide, which they have here and if they won't give it to me she'll get hold of an amp and inject me this evening. She agreed I have to stop the sickness or I'll end up in hospital.

I don't think I'm dehydrated...I'm going to the loo a lot and it's not dark coloured. I try to constantly sip water to counteract the fluids I'm puking. The diarhoea has stopped, so i think I'm into HG territory now. Sad

banana87 how fst does metaclopramide work?

Not long. It actually does nothing for the nausea, it just prevents you from bringing anything up. You need fluids via IV to rehydrate plus the metaclopramide to empty your stomach faster so you don't lose anything when you try to be sick.

pipoca · 13/10/2010 15:44

but do you still dry heave?

I did, yes.

Hi, just saw your post you poor thing, had to sympathize. I am glad you are seeing the doctor, but a stomach bug that lasts six days is unusual.
I do hope it is just a stomach bug, but in the unfortunate event that it is Hyperemesis, you need anti vomiting meds for sure and to have your urine checked regularly to make sure you don't get dehydrated. I do hope it isn't HG, but seven or eight weeks would be about the time.
If it is, then there is a good chance it will get a lot better as time goes on, but it is tough, and I do hope you might consider visiting us on the Hyperemesis Awareness thread (really, that is a misnomer, it is more of a support thread), because everyone there knows just what you are going through.
Try mint tea, it did help me just a tiny bit;
Acupunture worked wonders (I had mine some yhears ago and the doctor refused meds). For some reason, crisps do seem to stay down, and coke too. Really unhealthy, but at this stage you have to put aside thoughts of healthy food for a while.
Wish you better soon.

Thanks Lucinda I have a wonderful friend who is a midwife and she talked to me about it all and has got me an injection of metaclopramine and I now have that in syrup form too. I feel better in that I'm not puking but I still feel nauseous and have dry heaved this am. It is def HG and this is when it started last time. I had looked into accupncture so will find more out about it.
I'll pop over to the HG thread for a nosey now, thanks.

xx
