GTT - what to eat in the 3 days prior

I have read on the internet (always a reliable source of medical advice Hmm) that you should increase your carb intake in the 3 days prior to a full GTT. ANyone know why this is?

I had mini GTT last week and it came back 8.6 (7.8 is upper limit of normal). So, I have a full GTT on Monday. I was not advised anything about eating in the 3 days prior. Just told to fast from midnight the night before test.

I am having a GTT in December and haven't been given any advice about what to eat or not to eat beforehand.

On the whole, I would say that the test is meant to identify how your body processes the sugars under normal circs, and with that in mind, you should probably eat your normal diet, as this will give the most accurate picture of what is going on.

Any attempt to manipulate the result by doctoring your diet prior to the test, probably isn't going to do you or your baby any favours, as it is likely to lead to a decision being made based on inaccurate information.

I had to do a GTT last month and the paperwork said not to change my eating habits during the 3 day run up to the test - just to fast for 12 hours beforehand.

No idea why you would want to increase your carbs but i suspect you're probably best off not eating anything different to normal.

Good luck with the test.

Carbs contain complex sugars which take longer to form into glucose than sugary foods. Hence they would probably keep your blood sugar level at a level rate for longer. It sounds like an attempt to manipulate the result which is a really bad idea.

Just eat normally.

I'm not in the uk, the letter I was given was to eat normally for the three days prior. Changing your diet will change the result, so you may be poorly diagnosed either way, which is what you dont want.
They want to see how your body will respond with a sugar overload on an empty stomach.

Good luck.

I have my GTT on Thursday.
All i've been told was not to eat or drink anything other than water from midnight.

I meant to ask when i made the appointment.... can i still have rennie tablets for my heartburn? Does anyone know? Ta

Unfortunately, I think it's no to the rennie tablets. I believe water is the only acceptable intake before the test.

From wha tI can find on the carbs, I think they are saying be sure to eat a normal amount of them and not that you should load up on them. Something about protein and fat only before the test might produce and artifical high and then crash. But, I don't really understand the details.

It's a no to the Rennie I should think, my letter also said only to consume prescribed medicines that are totally necessary for life and to take them to the test so they know what you've had.

Fingers crossed you don't get heart burn because you're not eating, but I would take them for after, along with a very light lunch and good book.

I would also sip water frequently to help wash down any rising acid. And would probably try not not to have a big acid producing meal the night before.

Thanks ladies.
I had a feeling the answer would be no to the rennie tablets.
I get bad heartburn & the only thing that works is rennie tablets. I think i'll try having a lighter meal tonight & prop myself up a bit more in bed to try & help prevent me getting heartburn during the night.
