Hi everyone! Hope you are all doing well. Grin

Im now 21 weeks and so trying to heed advice and sleep on my side but its soooo painful!

I have to keep switching sides every 30mins or so as my hips are giving me such problems! Im not sleeping well at all & doesnt help that OH is fast asleep snoring away without a care in the world...Grrrrr!!!

Anyone else having this problem? I tried lying on top of the duvet for extra cushioning but after 10mins of being relatively comfy...the pains returned.

Be interested to know if there is something Im missing...any tips much appreciated!

I had this last time and starting to get it this time too.

This pillow really helps me to get a good sleep - expensive but worth it if you are really uncomfortable.

Also, mention it to your MW, she will probably refer you for some physio.

Try a pillow (double lenght or 2 sewn together), between your legs from thighs to feet.
Also, no weight bearing exercise such as jumping, jogging etc - your joints will be looser now and they need a bit of TLC.

Ahh, I remember that so clearly from my first pregnancy. So painful and really disrupted my sleep, didn't help that it took about 5 mins and a crane to turn over each time either! I had some acupuncture and osteopathy from a specialist who treated pregnant women. It didn't completely go but did help. Also sleeping with a pillow between my legs and under my hip relieved it a bit.

Thanks MiniMarmite - I'll certainly give it a go. Im open to anything right now, otherwise its going to be a very tough few months if I cant get any shut-eye!

oldmum thanks for the tip - I have been doing a bit of yoga and am deffo avoiding anything too strenuous. I feel like i might need a hip replacement after this baby arrives! Honestly...! Grin

It seems like there is no clear solution twinkletoes but nice to see its pretty common. I feel your pain & maybe if the pillows dont help I can get some physio/osteo or something if you found it helpful. I too struggle to turn over & do try to be as dainty as possible as I dont want to wake up OH. Although last night it was hilarious as all my wriggling did wake him up and he said "what are you doing???" and I was practically at the end of my tether and shouted "my hips are killing me...I cant sleep!!!"....to which he replied..."okay, can you nip to the post office tomorrow?" Smile

They really dont get it do they...? But thats a whole new thread.... Wink

I'm on PG 2 and had this last time and it's come back earlier this time, it did go away in between, so don't book the hip replacement op just yet. Currently 25weeks and feel like my hips have run a marathon on concreate some mornings.

I agree with the long pillow, that does help. I also put a pillow behind me and sometimes lie more angled to my back and push the long pillow under my bump to support it, that does seem to take the pressure off my hip for a while.

Try to avoid a lot of walking on hard surfaces. I tend to walk a lot on Fridays and Friday nights are a killer. I also have an exercise/birthing ball to sit on which again relieves the pressure. When you get really massive in the latter weeks it's also good to lean over and take the pressure off your lower back.

I'm not one for meds during pregnancy, but when it has been really bad I have taken a couple of paracetamol before bed and they are some of the best nights sleep I've have.

Don't worry about waking up the OH, you're in it together and sometimes they need reminding of that. Over the next 15 weeks I'll have every pillow and cusion in the bed trying to make my nest comfortable, and I will rearrange it every 30 mins. DH should be grateful he can still get in there with me.

hi, I remember this well, not much fun. I'd recommend acupuncture, getting a referral to your physio and the article on pelvic girdle pain on babycentre.co.uk

My pain went away as soon as I gave birth.

Hi, I have had this for weeks now, it is so crap especially when you're working full-time :(

I had a group session at the physio - all good advice but no 'fast fixes'. So, after one particular awful night I booked in with a local (recommended) chiropractor who worked her (a little bit painful) magic and I slept like a baby. That was about a six weeks ago and every time I feel my hip 'going' again I've been back (twice now). It's not cheap at £30 a pop but for me it is sooooo worth it.

I think different treatments work for different people but if you can find a recommended chiro in your area with experience treating SPD in pregnant ladies it's worht a go if you can afford it.

Best of luck x

I've had this on and off since about 25 wks but during the last month it got really bad - to the point I was waking up several times a night and barely able to walk in the morning.

I've been doing ante natal yoga which did help and the lady that leads the sessions suggested I see an osteopath (does similar stuff to a chiropractor but a bit more gentle), preferably one who specialises in treating pregnant women. So, I found one and had my first appointment last week - that night I slept right through for the first time in AGES. It still gives me a couple of twinges but I honestly couldn't believe the difference it made. Got a follow-up this week. Can highly recommend it!

Hello - I'm nearly 36 weeks and have the same problem. I wake up in the early hours in pain. It radiates from my hips down to my knees. I do find that wearing a slight heel or sturdy trainers during the day helps. I get the worst pain when I've been wearing pumps.

There's some stretching exercises you can do which help a little and getting up in the night and walking around is good.

Only a few weeks left for me so I'm just managing it in my own way, but if I still had 19 weeks to go I'd go to a physio!

cluelessnchaos · 12/10/2010 10:16

I am nearly 36 weeks too and put up with this in all of my pregnancies ( this is number 4) went to see the physio two weeks ago who fitted me with a support belt and it's made a massive difference, I am not to wear it when sleeping but it seems to hold me together enough to help at night, the pain is still there and I pile myself up with cushions but I can't believe I went for so long without doing anything, get a referral asap.

I had this problem during my pregnancy. I found it more comfortable to sleep with a duvet folded lengthwise under the sheet for extra padding.

Oops, sorry! Just read your post again. Hope you find other helpful solutions Blush
