I have extreme pain in my face and gums after having a tooth pulled out.
Is it safe to take paracetemol with Codeine in? Im about 10 weeks pregnant..

yes.

PaulineCampbellJones · 10/10/2010 19:27

Yes. I was given it a few times when I had migraine for hyperemesis.

I had some, but it was proscribed. I think it is ok, but not towards the end of pregnancy.

FourEyesGood · 10/10/2010 20:21

Yes, but only for three days. I took it for back pain, and I found it really difficult to come off it - it's definitely very addictive (mainly because it works so well!).

I wouldn't take it. Its an opiate and you are only ten weeks pregnant. I might take it later in pregnancy - but not this early on. Sorry if that sounds like not what you want to hear - but I am just being honest!

FWIW I had it prescribed to me at 5 weeks pregnant and assured it was fine.

AKMD · 10/10/2010 21:07

I got it prescribed during my hospital stay the week before DS was born. Made me feel like I was going to die but my mum apparently can't tolerate it either so it must be dodgy genes rather than it being bad for pregnant women :)

I have been prescribed codeine continuously since 18 weeks (now 30) for sciatica, only taken it when can't function without it, though that's more often now. All the GPs and consultants I have seen offered it, one after checking the diagnostics book. I've been told the main issue in pregnancy is a slight increase in breathing problems if you're taking it when baby is born (which in my case is outweighed by the fact that I would be immobile so liable to other complications without them).

It's worth seeing your GP though, even if just for peace of mind so they assure you if it's ok-you have a long time to wait to meet your baby, so best to have any possible worries assuaged by a doctor so they don't play on your mind. And it would be a free prescription too! Even with my pill intake, i still think it's always worth thinking every time you take something, could you cope without it-if you need help is there if needed though.

I'd see /call your GP or midwife as I am sure all circumstances vary, but it certainly is prescribed throughout pregnancy. I'm 17 weeks now and was prescribed dihydracodeine when I was 10 weeks and I need to take it on and off. Makes me feel sick though so I avoid it unless really can't cope!

My mw advised codeine when I was in early labour with my DS1.

It made me a lickle bit crazy, I was thrashing around and going on about moving furniture, very odd!

It made my Grandad halloucinate too, must be a family thing.

My point though, it's okay to take!

vmcd28 · 11/10/2010 17:09

unless theres an underlying health risk, then yes, it is fine to take.
The only problem I've had with it is that it makes me very constipated.

Charleney · 11/10/2010 19:28

Thanks everyone :) spoke to my midwife today and she said its fine to take for a short period :)

just make sure you drink a lot of water and eat some roughage - you do NOT want piles already. Believe me.
