How much weight gain is normal during pregnacy? All books say something different.I'm 24 weeks and have already put on a stone...I've never looked or felt this big.I hear women saying that they have only put weight on in the baby bump but I'm clearly putting weight on all over.I am eating healthily but not exercising as much as I could as I'm so tired.Any thoughts?

Hi Jojo,

I'm 21 weeks and have probably put on a 10lb-14lb (although I am not quite sure how much I weighed to start with). I haven't put on much weight elsewhere though, just have a huge bump.

This is my second though, not sure if that makes much difference. I have noticed that I am FAR bigger this time, and have increased in the boob department, whereas that was negligible with DC1.

Try not to fret about it too much - I have had all the 'how far?!' and 'I was never that big' comments too. I find putting my fingers in my ears and going lalalalala helps. I was quite big at the end with DC1 and got used to comments from random strangers then. It all depends on how big you are to start with, how tall you are, if you are short-bodied etc. Your weight gain certainly doesn't sound outrageous to me Smile

its deifferent for everyone i suppose, last pregnancy i put on alot over 3 n half stone, i was underweight before pregnancy and i put weight on everywere infact put more weight on round my bum than i did on my tummy, but saying that i looked like i had only put a stone on i never bought maternity jeans i remained in my same jeans, i think i had extra water retention. dont worry about it too much as long as your eating good thats what is important and remember every woman doesnt carry the same some just get a bum others put on all around. im currently 13 weeks pregnant with my 2nd and have actually lost a stone falling to just 7 stone 9, oh what id give to put weight on lol :)

MadAboutQuavers · 08/10/2010 14:58

JoJo - don't worry about it.

By 24 weeks I'd put a stone on

I'm now 36 weeks and have put a total of 1stone 11 pounds on, which I'm pretty happy with

As long as you're healthy, baby's healthy, and you're getting plenty of rest and a varied diet, don't worry. Your body is doing the job it's intended to do Smile

a bump i meant not a bum

I found this calculator useful: www.gurgle.com/tools/pregnancy_weight_gain_calendar/default.aspx

It takes into account your pre-pregnancy BMI which determines what a good weight gain in pregnancy is for you (e.g. if you were overweight before getting pregnant you should aim to put on less extra weight).

bundlebelly · 08/10/2010 15:02

I'm 21 weeks and gained a stone. I think it's ok. Just try to eat healthily and just go for a walk for exercise. I find I feel really sick if I try to do more.
It's not so hard to lose afterwards. Don't worry about it, just enjoy changes.

jojodragonfly · 08/10/2010 15:04

Im smiling now!THANKYOU!I dont mind being bigger and love being pregnant....i think i just worry-as most ppl say you look about 30 weeks, etc.

I put 4 stone on with each of my girls and 5 1/2 stone on with my son. No one was concerned but me. Think they worry more if you dont put weight on

daisystone · 08/10/2010 15:39

34 weeks and I dare not get on the scales.

All I know is that my thighs and arse are huge Shock.

in many european countries, pregnant women's weight gain is being carefully monitored. putting too much weight could result in complications during late stages of pregnancy / birth and have a negative effect the woman's health / recovery after delivery. i follow the european, rather than the uk guidelines on this matter and have been keeping a food diary with calorie count, trying to not eat more than 200-300 calories more than pre-pregnancy (in fact, this is what most books recommend). doing gentle excercise is also quite helpful. try yoga or swimming. you might feel much better afterwards.

japhrimel · 10/10/2010 10:20

NICE do now recommend that excess weight gain in pregnancy is checked for as it leads to risks, e.g. of GD.

I don't think stressing over it helps though. If you're putting on weight all over, that's a pretty simple way of knowing you're putting on excess weight.

PipPipPip · 10/10/2010 10:59

Milla Jovovich, the super hot star of The Fifth Element, put on 70 pounds while she was pregnant.

This isn't a scientific or particularly helpful comment, but googling pictures of her might cheer you up - she is massive and gorgeous! haha

But yeah, I guess it might be worth following these other ladies' advice and chatting to your GP and getting some more exercise.

PaigeTurner · 10/10/2010 12:17

If you're eating healthily and not over-eating then you should be ok. Maybe some of the "all over" stuff is just losing muscle tone (like me - I am super flabby now, and don't mention the bingo wings!) or a bit of water retention.

planner26 · 10/10/2010 16:00

daisystone i feel your pain. i'm 33+3 and definitely not going to be hitting the scales til waaaay after Xmas!

redandyellowandpinkandgreen · 10/10/2010 16:45

I've gained 11 pounds at 35 weeks but I had a high BMI to start with and one of those sites said I should only gain between 12 and 20 pounds, based on my pre-pregnancy BMI. I think as long as you're eating healthily and not pigging out then you should be okay.

missorinoco · 10/10/2010 16:53

You see you'll look better for gaining weight.

I've gained very little at 18 weeks, but have a huge belly, which means my bum is gone, my face is pinched and don't I look a treasure!

BongoWinslow · 11/10/2010 10:57

I've gained 14 kilos all up (am 40+4...) and have a fairly neat bump (I'm 6ft tall) and still people's comments range from "you're tiny!" to "you're enormous!" to "you're ready to pop!" to "you can't be about to have a baby!"

It's quite bizarre how total strangers become 'experts' on what size one should be.

I digress.

I put on most of my weight by about 34 weeks and then it slowed down - in the last few weeks I've expanded a bit but not really increased in weight.

I swam 4 times a week and that really helped me feel better as I get a bit of the day when I don't feel like a cow and I think it helped keep me sort of toned.

Just try not to give in to the urge to eat too much junk and you'll be fine (I was obsessed with custard slices from Maison Blanc ...).
